The brown one is called "Hosui" I grow it, and it does have a flavour comparable to brandy. Most people pick that flavour up, it's a common description of the cultivar online. The yellow one looks and sounds like 20th century, which is a very common variety. I'm looking for Scion from the Chojuro variety in western Europe, which reportedly tastes like butterscotch!

I have a fully yellow variety growing here in the UK known as Shinseiki, it's at it's best and sweetest when they fall off the tree ( I catch them in bags ). I also have a Hong-Li which is pale green to yellow and is actually traditional pear shaped plus I have now ordered a 'traditional' copper brown variety which I forget the name of.

@@allthefruit yes but I wouldn't bother growing regular pears as they are so easy to buy here and extremely cheap, my garden is tiny so I'd rather grow Nashi pears as they are rare to find here 👍

@@lyonheart84 I just orderd Shinko, Nijisseiki and a verry smal Olympic(Korean giant) . First two from German based online Gardencenters, verry nice plants (shape) and the last one from ebay, still verry small maybe year 2 after grafting. I lived in Japan for a while and the taste from our Germansupermarket nashis is - sorry nearly nothing, just a glimps, from whats possible in compare withe the once in Japanese stores, where they sell lots of this bronze coloured once too. The tast gapis evan bigger, than between cheap supermarket tomatoes and own garden tomatos. Anyway congratulation for growing such a nice tree

Hi, what is the texture of Hong-Li like? Is it more crunchy like other Asian pears or softer like Western pears? I’m looking for a Syut-Lei (Cantonese meaning snow pear) tree. I believe its cultivar name is Ya-Li, which means duck pear in Mandarin Chinese. Apparently the Chinese think this cultivar of pear looks like a duck (with a long neck?).

I have seen those at the supermarket a few times, they are always the brown ones. They are expensive and they sell them in individual packages that are padded. It is very odd to see. I hope they carry them this year at the store, I would love to try one.

Strang. Here they never sell the brown ones

I just ate one from my tree yesterday. They are better than most pyrus communis in my opinion.

@@allthefruit No I don’t have a yellow one. The variety I have is called ‘Niitaka’

I toght of growing these but the fact that they lack sweeteness made me change my mind. And i ate just supermarket Nashi pears but rippen on the tree like yours ,they are much better for sure. Ive planted Bartlett( known in Europe as Williams) instead.
@allthefruit3 жыл бұрын
Still try planting a nashi tree or two. Maybe you will like the brown ones better
@hfricke26612 жыл бұрын
please try, the supermarket once in Germany are just a glimps of taste than in Japanese supermarkets... its like said b4, low quality supermarkttomatos and own grown taste so much different, so dont give up hope and chooce an early ripening one,,,, in case you live in Germany outside vine-area (Mosel, kaiserstuhl etc)

It's not just the appearance of the fruit, the texture of Asian pears is also more akin to an apple than a European pear. They are crunchy and juicy with a mild flavor, while a ripe European pear is soft/buttery and has a strong flavor when ripe. I think that adds to the confusion and leads people to believe it is an apple/pear hybrid.

Yep, correct. Confusing but yummy

Great video! I'm wondering if Nashis are more disease and pest resistant that the european counterparts.
