basically what happens is a prince disguises himself as a peasant and giselle falls in love with him and they get engaged. this other guy is really mad because he's been in love with giselle for years. so, he finds out that this other guy is actually a prince and is engaged to a duchess. he calls the royal party (which starts the scene that you see in the video) and giselle puts the pieces together that the guy she's in love with lied to her and is engaged to the duchess. in some productions, she kills herself, but in most she has a heart condition that makes her unable to do strenuous activities for too long, so she essentially dies of a broken heart. the entire second act is her as a ghost saving her prince from the vengeful spirits of other women who have died of a broken heart. absolutely gorgeous ballet, one of my favorites for sure also, the whole scene that is in this video is basically her remembering all the times that her and the princes spent together, slowly driving her crazy. it's so heart-wrenching spending an hour watching this sweet, sheltered girl fall in love and then have everything torn away from her

@@embop1266 as a dancer who has danced in this ballet and when my manic depression decides so kick my ass i always find myself going to this ballet. what i love about the ballet esspecially that scene is she is so relatable. she falls in lvoe figures out its not real and goes crazy. I relate a lot because somethings esspecially a lot of little things boxing up together causes my manic depression to spike and I always feel as if I am giselle going through this but with my situation instead of hers. hers is obviously worse because she actually dies but the fact that a ballet so old can still be relatable is very cool in my opinion. and natalia osipova does this scene the best and she really protrays her crazy the best. moral of the story i am currently manic just watched this and feel exactly how she feels excpet im not dead. rip giselle rip hillarion but fuck albrect.

I love the way Berthe pushes Albrecht away to me he will always be the true villain of the story, Hilarion was doing the right thing by exposing him as the liar and cheater that he was, even if he only did it out of envy, it was the right thing to do. Giselle and Hilarion deserved better.

@@NOONE-cd4gu Read the plot of Giselle, specifically act 1: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giselle In a nutshell - the guy who blows the horn is Hilarion. He is a local gamekeeper in love with Giselle who is a peasant. The other guy is Albrecht who is a nobleman pretending to be a villager. Giselle is in love with him, but she does not know he is actually a duke and is already engaged. Hilarion reveals who he is. He sounds the horn, so the nobles who are hunting come and reveal who Albrecht really is. So a lot of people who watch think Hilarion is a villain because he exposed Albrecht when in fact, Albrecht is a liar.

Peter Wright's production is tremendous. The story and dance flow together and it all makes sense. The dancing is of the highest level, but also the mime and acting - especially Giselle's mother. Acosta's Albrecht also shows, I think, genuine love for Giselle and real contrition in Act 2 - although we can never really forgive him to the extent Giselle does. We finally also have a Hilarion who evokes pity and sympathy and is a well-developed character. The pas de six was beautifully danced especially by Choe and Zuchetti (balon, épaulement, good fifth on take off and landing, plus charm - both of them!). I have mixed feelings about Myrtha, but she got better as Act 2 progressed. Osipova and Acosta are just perfection incarnate: I think one would rarely see such a spellbinding partnership in Giselle. Thank you for uploading this extract.

I'm very glad youtube served me this beautifully portrayed story without words. Fantastic acting. I don't even need to know the background, you get everything you need to know from the performances: Giselle was in love with the main guy, who appears to be a nobleman in disguise, who is reunited with his love interest, also of higher class, which seems to break Giselle, who starts seeing things and keeps running back to her mother figure for comfort and continually trying desperately to get the man to love her before finally dying of the emotional shock of the ordeal, whereupon the man blames another man, presumably for playing some role in the deception, but is quickly turned away. He regrets what happened and tried to revive her. What a moving tableau.

@@daviclemons6910basically, giselle falls in love with this nobleman named Albrecht. However, Albrecht was already engaged to someone else and didn't tell her. The local gamekeeper, Hilarion, was in love with her, but she never reciprocated. When Hilarion discovered Albrecht was actually engaged, he reveals it to her (this is shown at the beginning of this video, the man blowing the horn is Hilarion, he blows the horn to summon all of the nobles and expose that Albrecht is engaged). Giselle, who already has a frail heart due to a health condition, goes mad because of the distress and heartbreak of Albrecht's betrayal, and dies because of her weak heart. (Some variations of this play have her commit suicide by stabbing herself with the knife on the floor). The end of the video is everyone mourning Giselle's death.

I seldom wrote comments on KZbin, while this time I have to, since I never seen any performance like this one, it's totally an extraordinary performance because of Natalia Osipova's, her portrayal of Giselle's Mad Scene is truly mesmerizing which will be remembered forever by any person who saw her performance. I'm in awe of her ability to channel the character's emotions so vividly - her every movement resonates with the story she's telling. Adolphe Adam's music is stunning, as well as the Royal Ballet for bringing it to life with such finesse and artistry. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of art with us! The following is a brief analysis and description for each key sense of Natalia Osipova's performance in this video. In such a short performance, she very naturally used her impeccable and exquisite dance, extremely rich body language and facial expressions, extremely real and unforgettable to show the state and process of girls going mad and death because of love, especially the capricious mental state is quite chilling. She should be a great actress! 0:00 Hilarion (local gamekeeper) using Albrecht's hunting horn, calls back the party of noblemen 0:26 Giselle felt something ominous was about to happen in her eyes, already know the identity of Albrecht, turning around slowly, looking at him affectionately, sobbing 1:08 Seeing Albrecht has engaged with his fiancée, the two are talking sweetly, her eyes are heartbreaking, The body began to shake uncontrollably 1:15 She frantically rushing forward to block the two who are being intimate. The music is suddenly very intense 1:27 Suppressing tears and identifying in front of Albrecht fiancée that she belongs to Albrecht, but she doesn't have an engagement ring, and desperately explained that she only had the heart to love him 1:32 She was holding Albrecht's arm tightly, begging him, asking why he did this to her, her heart is broken 1:41 She weakly fell in the embrace of his mother, the only person who loved her, almost fainting, curled up, Albrecht tried to get close to her, but she tried to avoid him 2:06 She got up suddenly and tried to run to Albrecht again, but was ruthlessly pulled away by the person next to him 2:18 The melody of heartbreak sounded, and she stood alone, sobbing as if recalling a good memory 2:53 A pair of eyes suddenly became dull, and the movements became weird 3:04 She started talking to herself 3:10 She picks grass from the ground to taste, her body language shows girlish features 3:20 She squatted on the ground again and used plants to tell her fortune, turns out she should marry him, the joy of keeping herself in a hallucination, while was destroyed by reality finally 3:50 The sudden change of music is sharp and uneasy, as if she was suddenly possessed by an evil spirit, she quickly rushed to take the sword, waved it back and forth, and danced a strange dance, It is obvious that her face and movements have become ferocious 4:08 She bumped into a man, the man warned her not to mess around, she suddenly laughed nervously, and stepped back quickly 4:13 suddenly she bumped into Albrecht's fiancée, who was full of disdain and disgust, while, she tugged at her skirt and apologized very naturally and politely 4:17 Taking a few steps back, she collapsed weakly on the ground and was supported by Albrecht, She seemed to be back in the imaginary world again, but this time her mental problems were more serious, touching her mother's face affectionately, as if she wanted to say something, but did she say it? 4:40 Suddenly she looked up to the sky and saw the soul or spirits and she followed with the souls 4:47 Disturbing, fascinated, extremely beautiful and somewhat evil eyes, as if seduced by evil spirits 4:57 Those souls flew away, as if her soul was taken away too, she suddenly lowered her head and remained motionless, turned around and smiled strangely, and looked at Albrecht, and returned to the world of her fantasy 5:16 Albrecht tried to hold her by the arm, However, she didn't notice him and may be she was even not notice that she was dancing solo, her body was dancing an extremely beautiful and angelic dance uncontrollably, she even excited clapping and made a cute movement, while he was feeling extremely sad 5:13 The music stopped abruptly, and she suddenly stopped dancing, standing there motionless, as if returning to reality again, she feels sick to her heart, her face becomes painful 5:47 She became very restless and in extreme pain, playing with hair, wrapping arms around myself, her motion becomes uncoordinated, she bent down and lowered her head, her hands pressed tightly to her face 5:55 The music rushes up, she suddenly broke free and exaggeratedly threw her hands away, her face became very hideous, running frantically back and forth among the group of people, as if going to a place to do something, the eyes are very scary 6:10 see the souls again 6:20 She was pulled by others and asked her to go to her mother, her expression became normal, her mother is crying, yet she is laughing and hugging her mother, see her mother for the last time 6:27 She was looking affectionately at the person she loved with a bright smile, she flew over and passed away suddenly in the arms of her beloved

It's hard to say just if you compare the start how she looks to the end she looks very pale and tired. Maybe it's because shes not smiling and het hair is a bit messy. But also could be that she is genuinely tired from all the running around.

These actors are phenomenal! I don't really know the story but so much emotion in the scene and I feel so bad for the girl! Though did she die from the shock or did she stab herself then die later?

she died because of heart attack. the fact that the man (who's actually a prince) lied about his identity mad her heartbroken and killed by it

It’s the shock. She actually has a heart attack. Fun fact: she was supposed to stab herself when the ballet first premiered, but audiences found it too shocking and it wasn’t well received, so they changed it so she dies from the shock, but I believe the moment with the sword was put in as a nod to the original ending.

She had a weak heart and the stress of the moment agitated her cardiovascular system, causing her to die Or she might have gotten dancing disease
@sixrats

Giselle the character is canonically supposed to have some kind of heart problem -- described vaguely as a "weak heart." While she does threaten/attempt to stab herself, this isn't what kills her. Her heart fails due to the stress of the betrayal.

Natalia is absolutely electrifying! Act 1 is really hard to pull off. In fact, I just saw Giselle at another world-famous company and Act 1 was totally dull. How fabulous to see how committed everyone is to expressing this tragedy and what a treat to see so many future principals weeping in the crowd: Marcelo, Frankie, Yasmin..

Of course, that didn't stop Giselle from trying to compose the second thoughts in her head, the mixed feelings in her eyes, and the torn loyalties in her heart, but suddenly seeing, hearing, and feeling the presence of Queen Myrtha of the Willis did.
