Abstract:
In this excerpt from the Masterclass on Tchaikovsky's Pezzo capriccioso, Professor Shakhovskaya provides corrections and instructions on fingering, phrasing and articulation, expressiveness and character, dynamics, vibrato and tuning. There should be no sudden attacks or exaggerated accents, the sound must be controlled and tender, delicate, dolce, legato, with plasticity... and natural cantabile. The artist must perform the repeated musical material with a semantically full and rich expression.
Finally, the teacher talks about the character of this music and Tchaikovsky's compositional language: spacious, with long lines, with plasticity and without abruptness but neither with excessive sentimentality nor mannerism.

Excellent lesson from a wonderful cellist and teacher. One must be sensitive to the nuance she is demonstrating, and that means listening and being sensitive to the quality and texture being conveyed and then making the adjustments.
