How some people don't think Dessay is one of the greatest sopranos in the world is beyond me !!! Her limpid tone and superior musicianship sets her apart from EVERYONE else!

Jim Buxton I think Natalie is one of the best modern days sopranos though she is retired now. She has a spectacular voice with great technique, acting chops, and interpretative skills. However, I prefer Lucia Popp's In Trutina and Frühlingsstimmenwaltzer. Natalie's voice is very similar to Lucia's: lyric coloratura voices that are light and agile, but Natalie's voice can be a bit piercing, which is why I just prefer Lucia's crystal clear and warmer sound, as it is easier and friendlier to the ear.

Absolutely agree, she's one of the greatest. Though I'd argue her tone is limpid rather than limped. Sorry, couldn't resist being pedantic ;-)

I found her!) My favorite voice from the opera of my childhood. Other voices that I heard in another version of this opera are not as warm, soft and clear. This is the best soprano I've heard

Yes, truly amazing. That was 27 seconds without a breath, and just as Orff wrote it. Thank you, Natalie! A beautiful performance. I'm buying the CD. Every bit as good as Lucia Popp from 1966. I now have two favorites.

Di certo, se affermassi che al mattino presto, quando mi sveglio, mi piace sentirla cantare, potrei passare per folle, ma chi non lo è per esser felice di un'altro giorno ancora. Bravissima

I must add a post script to my Janowitz comment. Many have posted this selection as sung by Gundula on you tube. Only a fair assessment can be made, if one hears her on the Original 1968 recording (remastered approximately 30 years later) thank you.

Not too long ago,saw ND perform live at the MET ...NYC "La Fille du Regiment" (avec J D Florez)... she was wonderful! I do believe I was the only one in house that night, who stood and yelled "BRAVA!"....However, I have yet to hear anyone come even CLOSE to Gundula Janowitz with any of the CB sop.solos.Dessay is shrill and lacks the depth/sonority required here. Orff had to have "been on drugs" when he composed this. I speak of not only the soprano solo, baritone, but the tenor, "Cignus ustus cantat" o.m.g. This piece... IS indeed a masterpiece. I will say nothing more unkind here. However, Janowitz is totally and completely....flawless! So many familiar with the "O Fortuna"....THING. I WILL end with My deepest thanks to Ssteinway S for sharing....sincerely.
