I have to say, I kind of get it. If my mom's house was bombed and I was in a foreign country and all I could do was talk to her occasionally when she could get the phone to work, I would be out of my mind with fear. In Natalie's position having no way to get her mom out of there if someone called me out of nowhere that I didn't expect like her ex and offered to send help to rescue her I would also feel like maybe I really missed the boat with that person. Especially since the new boyfriend tends to see her as the last priority in his life and didn't even as about her family when the war started. Edited to add- of course none of the above means she is a stable person.
