This video makes me think there was a literal conspiracy by the music industry to downplay female instrumentalists. Nothing else makes any sense and I am not usually one for conspiracy theories (or accusing people of gender bias for that matter) but I'll call a spade is a spade. Female instrumentalists exist, so SHOW THEM!

What a great capture. I can't get over how young Natalie looks... I was 10 years old and obsessed with her. Now I'm 39 and they all look 15 years old.... singing songs that are now legendary. And today, they'd have to be shaking their bare asses to have the same fame they have here. Everyone would be on their phone. Here, everyone is present, and engaged. Makes me long for this time

Loved seeing Jen Turner's face light up with a huge grin when playing Baby I love you. She's really letting herself go & enjoying doing a playful song. She always keeps a serious, almost stoic appearance when doing a song off Tiger Lily. Plus the funky rhythm/lead sort of style she's laying down is great. 16+ minutes of pure magic from a band doing only their second public performance.

This was great to watch. Almost 20 years ago - how time flies! IMO Jennifer Turner's performance on Tigerlily was simply epic. I don't know where Natalie found her but that was a great artistic collaboration. Listen to her parts on I May Know The Word. Just unreal.
@portcullis562210 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Turner's guitar playing on 'I May Know The Word' reminded me of the late Paul Kossoff (best known for his work with Free).I can't really pay her playing a higher compliment than that as Paul Kossoff was the most soulful guitar player that I have ever heard-he played with so much feeling and he made every note sound as if he really meant it.It is a great shame that we haven't heard a lot more from Jennifer Turner over the last couple of decades.
@eugenewardjr.35067 жыл бұрын
Portcullis Here's to you on giving PK of Free his proper respect. Your description of his unique & heartfelt playing is spot on. I hated to see Free disband. A great lineup with their own signature sound & style.
@portcullis56227 жыл бұрын
There are other similarities, as I feel that 'I May Know The Word' is, in many ways, reminiscent of my favourite Free song 'Come Together In The Morning'. Quite different songs, but it is the beauty and feeling of the guitar solos, the wailing Hammond organ sounds, the booming basslines and the soul and emotion in Natalie's voice (as with Free's Paul Rodgers) that make me love those songs so much.
@leebatt79645 жыл бұрын
I remember thinking when i first heard that track, “ wow, natalie got jeff beck to play on her album”. Come to find it was a 22 year old girl nobody had heard of playing some of the tastiest, most restrained and mature guitar parts i have heard. She is so damn good.

It's a great tribute to one of the rarest talents I've had the privilege to see & listen to. (over & over). In a conversation between Jennifer and Natalie, Natalie says she loved it when they would go on stage and people would stare at Jennifer thinking no way she could play the guitar :) On another instance Natalie mentioned how hard Jennifer tried to convince Natalie to buy 2 giant Marshalls, and after that during each practice session Natalie would go "Jenniferrrr!!" and Jennifer would reply, "Ok I am turning it down", and at every soundcheck on stage Natalie would ask the sound guy how everything sounds from the stage, and the answer was the same each time: " You are all good except Jennifer is too high :)

I was there, but two blocks away working on a Airflow AC unit on the front of a television semi trailer. It was running so hot, I didn't dare shut it down. Brushed the condensers, and emptied two bottles of nitrogen, to blow the coils out. I asked them to bring it by our shop, for a more through cleaning Monday morning. They never showed. They gave me a huge wad of cash to pay for the Sat. Service call. My work was surprised when I turned it in Monday. It was too much money, so I got a nice tip, plus my OT. Not sure who was playing on stage at that time of day.
