Good to see you posting again. It is somehow comforting to know that someone of your caliber that I admire as a performer and coach also has to work hard on songs. So often we see the finished product and we don't see and appreciate the work it takes to make it seem so effortless. I also appreciate how you took Megan Hiltys rendition as a springboard and made it your own, and not a copy. It also makes me appreciate Megans version seeing how much work it is to navigate the intervals and placement in this song. She had no one to guide the way. Thank you for your courage and insight for posting this. It is my hope to get some vocal lessons from you someday, Though Im a Bass/Baritone, this song is so great I would love to try it in a more crooner style.

Natalie, dahling, you are amazing! You know exactly where everything is placed!! How in the world is a growl done? I have never known how to do it without scraping my cords --- a no no!! :-)
@rjr69122 жыл бұрын
Right? I see jazz and theatre singers like casually growl, like, almost on accident sometimes and I get so mad because I haven't found it yet. I can belt and can even do decent false chord or meh fry screams but still have yet to figure out the damn jazz growl
@carr07602 жыл бұрын
I'm a voice teacher. I can explain how I do everything I do. Except for the growl. LoL I do not understand it. I just do it. I've also never found an explanation of it anywhere. I'm not convinced that any of us understand it. Haha

@jrbedford2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I hope some day my best choices sound even remotely as good as the ones that make you say "ew" about yourself. Lol. I would love to hear more about how you evaluate your choices, though, like what inspires you to make certain choices at certain parts of the song? Is it based on the music development arc? The musical moment? What's happening in the character's head? Or simply what "feels" right? I work with amateur singers a lot, and they often lack the kind of creative inspiration that seems intuitive for you, or maybe they just don't have the confidence to try a bunch of different things and then say "ew" for most and move on?
@rjr69122 жыл бұрын
I'd wager strongly that it's the confidence thing. Especially when you're in a lesson or practicing alone, you don't actually have to sound good. A lot of young/insecure singers never really push themselves outside a certain comfort zone because they're afraid of sounding bad. Why they forget is that not everything is a performance and that one if the purposes of practice is having a no-stakes environment in which to try out different techniques in different places and have the responsibility of making a conscious artistic or practical choice between whatever you've tried. The experimentation takes confidence and the evaluation takes practiced critical listening.

Not judging or anything at all! But as a guy, learning this song in the same key was actually much easier for me than most male theatre songs
@huss26002 жыл бұрын
Different parts of the voice are easier, im pretty sure Natalie keeps singing in and out of her passagio (vocal break area). As a male your probably singing in a higher headvoice dominant tone which makes easier. Then again I haven't heard you sing this but these are my perceptions.

Great walk through of a tricky song! Megan's version is definitive -- but Katharine McPhee has performed it live and some of her interpretation choices - particularly in the second half - are interesting in the context of this video, the lyric flubs aside: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJ67ZqiYrNOJjNU
