Idk if anyone else ever notices it but they say that Rory “disappeared in the woods” but when Lorraine was in the basement you see his mom holding him while holding a knife weeping “she made me do it”. Rory’s story always made me feel really sad and how everyone’s scared of him but in reality he was a very kind spirit, protecting the girls and hiding them because he knew what was going to happen.

@@snorpenbass4196 There's a netflix documentary that includes recordings of an exorcism they performed on a boy they were convinced had an evil entity latched to them. I can't remember the exact name it's been so long, but the kid was starting to act up and making strange animalistic noises at random during the night time to the point where the mother thought they had to do something. At that point the kid hadn't really expressed anything about what was wrong or how he was feeling and acted like everything was ok. Scary thing is, they get involved Laurie makes a claim she can see something then they start asking leading questions to the kid. After that the kids behaviour became even more erratic. Ended with a full blown attempt at an exorcism that was rather nasty. Then a brother of the kids winds up murdering his lover and blames it on this entity. Funny thing happened before this. There was an account of the dad who worked insane shifts and needed sleep during one of the kids episodes and coming out and picking the kid up and telling him to "shut up already!" immediately the kid calmed down and shut up. And by the end of the documentary, the third brother revealed that his mum had been spiking their food with some sort of sleeping agent that was known to cause delusions with prolonged ingestion over time. I genuinely believe that these two fed into the delusion and caused things to escalate to that point and it makes these kind of fictions, fun as they are a little harder to watch.

@@vonmalvarius- respectfully, anytime Hollywood puts the words 'based on a true story at the beginning of any movie, you have to go into it with the realization that about 95% of it will be baloney. Like for example, a murder may have happened; but how the person died & who did it is made up by whoever wrote the script - even if its based on certain evidence, even criminal investigations are done on a speculative narrative. Still tho, that's where it can be entertaining. (OK, 😬 that makes me sound really twisted - I don't find murder😱 entertaining 😅 - but I do enjoy a good ghost-story)

Living a few streets away from Ed and Lorraine’s real house, there’s been a lot of stories I’ve heard about from accounts of neighbors all around their small neighborhood to local town news. An older man recently all the way from Wisconsin came to Connecticut and tried to break into their house with all the demonic items and when police showed up he was saying that he was sent there by St. Michael to burn the house down and then he got tazed more than once after he started walking toward and yelling at the police. I drove up there once a few years ago and since the neighborhood is so small, every neighbor knew I didn’t live in the neighborhood and watched me drive by and turn around…I’m never going near their street again lol

As a horror fan that doesn't believe in the supernatural, ghost and possession stories are the ones I usually find the scariest. I guess it's that, even though I don't believe in it, putting myself in a world where that stuff is real freaks me out. A human killer or something tangible is scary, but there are still things you can do to survive, but being possessed by a demon? Nah. Nope.

It's kind of a James Wan signature, in my observation, to go HEAVY suspense early, and transition quite abruptly into fantastical-magical-insanity in the second half. It's his schtick at this point in a lot of his directed movies. This one; Insidious; Malignant; even Saw in some of the original, although it was far more prevalent in the later sequels. That said, he's also a master-class in seeing and hearing the scariest vision of a horror situation and putting the camera right where it needs to be. There's also a big emphasis on sets with hyperbolic visuals and the freedom to put a camera anywhere in them. These houses literally feel right out of an animated children's horror TV show; Impossibly large, dusty decor, every floor board is creaking, every staircase goes on forever on the way up and is a sheer drop on the way down. The ceilings are impossibly high, the lighting is by candle-light even when there's electric appliances. Each repeat viewing reveals these kinds of ridiculous tropes, but you can't deny their effectiveness

Yeah. I think “showing too much” is a big problem for movies like this. The mystery and suspense is where the real fear is. The tension is lost when you overexpose the antagonist. I’ve never been a fan of that trope. It’s always better to maintain some mystery and anxiety.

It's one thing I don't like about James Wan's films that I've seen, he creates a great environment and buildup, but as soon as he overexposes the antagonist it saps a lot of of the scare factor. The exorcism portion of this film has always felt like a big letdown compared to the really fun haunting build-up. This was a big issue I had with the IT films too. They quickly abandon the dread aspect in lieu of cheap bignoise scare attempts.

If something is unexplainable, shouldn't the answer be "I don't know what happened" or "I don't know what it was", not there is no explanation, therefore, it was a ghost? Since we don't have perfect knowledge of all possible scientific explanations, we are constantly expanding our scientific knowledge, if science doesn't seem to explain something the answer should be "I don't know", until you have an actual explanation. I'm not sure why people seem to use the supernatural or ghosts as the answer for the unexplained.

What set The Conjuring apart from the movies that were coming out at the time was exactly the fact that it wasn't afraid of being camp and over the top when it needed. Even if it looks ridiculous at times, that's what makes the horror genre fun and memorable. I’ve seen this movie a handful of times and thought it was alright but I don’t think I’ve given enough credit to the direction and cinematography. You made a great point by calling attention to how the camera misdirects the viewer, how it uses silent or slow shots with no subject or no specified point of view, or how they have normal things portrayed as unsettling like the girl standing on the stairs. Horror tropes aside, this movie does do a great job of building tension before we really see anything awful, you really can’t relax for a second during The Conjuring LOL and I hadn’t really appreciated that until I watched this, so thank you for giving me new things to enjoy even when you weren’t particularly enjoying yourself haha

I feel like it's not as scary as the OG. Also, I'm so glad I've come across your channel because I love your points you've made about this movie. Plus, your reactions are so funny and I'm all for it :)

Hey Natalie, you should check out the movie “Smile” if you haven’t already. Go in completely blind. I’m a huge horror fan and even I was in a pretzel during most of it. The main actress is absolutely stellar as well and it’s been a while since I’ve empathized that much with a horror protagonist.

What really makes this movie masterpiece of horror is not only the perfect execution of suspense and terror, but that you truly care about both the Warren and Perron families. Horror doesn’t work unless you care about the characters and you really come to love these characters. And this movie was released 10 YEARS AGO THIS YEAR!!!

The reason the first half is so scary is because it’s the most relatable to normal people it’s how we’d feel in this situation. When Ed and Lorraine show up it really calms us bc we trust them and it becomes more of a thriller and less of a horror.

Ooh! I would love to see a video where you talk about your supernatural experiences, if you're comfortable with that, of course. Years ago my mother had decorated the house for Christmas, one of the decorations was a wraith made out of fabric. We were having tea in the living room (this was days after the decorating was done) and we were talking about my grandmother (my mother's mother) when all of a sudden that wraith falls to the ground. The damn thing was made by my grandmother so my mother was quite touched by the coincidence. We also had flickering lights every now and then and although I'm a huge skeptic my mother likes to think it's my grandparents letting us know they're still there.

I’m so glad you classify yourself as a believer, I love that because same. I agree with your intro statement & then that plaque falling was just such a good validation of all the things you said in the beginning. It was like a nod, like, yeah you are spot on with your intuition. Yassss. ✨💕 I grew up watching the real Lorraine Warren on tv, she makes a cameo in this movie as an audience member while they’re giving a class.

Other than The Thing, this is the only scary movie I've been looking forward to seeing Nat react to. The true story aspect & elements legitimately creep me out- like all but one of the family returning to see the house/set, and the only child who didn't fell and broke her leg on the same day... Ugh. creepy af. ... Ps: Happy Birthday.🎉

Writers- darling…this is a true story. They actually had to lighten it up for the film, there was too much horror caused on this family physical and mental for the mpaa to rate. I had the honor of meeting Lorraine Warren, before she passed away, she filled the entire room with warmth and love. It was not a planned meeting. I introduced myself, and she sat and talked to me for a few minutes in the bookshop we were in. There were things she said that NOBODY knew, not even me. Things that happened years away, things that I didn’t know had happened when I was a baby. Just insane things. She hugged me and we said a prayer and she went on with her day. She truly loved every living being on this planet with her whole heart fully, until she passed. I truly believe she is loving us from the other side. ❤

Happy birthday, Natalie!!! Yay October birthdays!! Mine's Oct. 8th, but I have 24 years on you. Which means I was actually alive when the cases in these movies were in news headlines all the time. So for me, these are a lot scarier given they tie back to the fear and uncertainty of 7 year old me watching the story unfold slowly in the nightly news.

This family lived a nightmare. After the movie was released, a few of the daughters were interviewed on one of the morning shows. They said the movie was very close to what happened to them. Hollywood always sensationalizes to keep you interested. But, nothing that happened to them was "funny".

Fear of the unknown is scarier than any horror movie could ever display on-screen. That said, a story with all suspense and no payoff leaves most people feeling frustrated. Revealing the threat is a necessary part of horror story-telling. Some movies do it better than others, but you can never keep that tension going indefinitely.
