Hello! In this video I'll be sharing the process of making a gouache palette with my existing collection of gouache and new Art Toolkit palette. I bought both the Folio and Pocket palettes, and I'll be making a gouache palette using the larger Folio palette. They're lightweight and very small, making them perfect for travel and painting on location. I'll share my thought process when putting a palette together, swatch the paints, and talk to you about the colours and brands. I'll also use the palette for the first time to create some art in my sketchbook!

I meant to say but totally forgot: I am not at all loyal to any particular brand of gouache - all of these seem pretty good to me! The only difference I can see is that the Schmincke Horadam gouache seems to be a little more like a watercolour than some of the other brands in that it's not as opaque.
@sarahmaryslifeinpictures
@sarahmaryslifeinpictures 8 ай бұрын
Maybe try Schmincke designers Gouache, since it contains white in nearly every color and therefore is more opaque. Horadam gouache is loaded with pure pigment, no white in it since it is the horadam series, therefore it is not as opaque than the other gouache paints from other brands and not comparable
@jcline147
@jcline147 8 ай бұрын
Do you find that the pigment tends to settle out.. more so …when drying the gouache out in a pallet form rather than leaving it in a more liquid state in a tube? it seems to me that in the drying out process …there would be some settling of pigments that might make it more difficult to re-wet, and be able to give the same vibrancy as the more liquid form. I’m just learning about this medium and therefore the question.

Pro tip: add a tiny bit of vegetable glycerine to each pan and stir it in. This will keep it moist for longer, make it easier to reactivate and make it dry slower in the pan, which minimises the amount of cracking. And when I say “a tiny bit” I mean one drop. For burnt umber I use 2 drops 👌🌻

Little hidden house. A quote someone said really spoke to me and that is: don’t go for the masterpiece right away instead go for the joy of creating and enjoy the process, especially in a sketch journal. A sketch journal is a safe place for your imagination to stretch and explore and it has helped me relax and paint intuitively.

Natasha, I love to watch your calming videos and your talking about paint and colours. I use gouache palettes for years now. Don't worry about the cracking of the paint, it will disappear when you use your lovely pallette. Maybe a tip? Add one or two drops of gum arrabic in your paint, even on the dry paint in your box. Looking forward to more of your artwork and videos!

I have a little bottle of gum arabic, so may try that! The only thing I am a bit concerned about is whether it would make the colours a bit shiny rather than matte?

Little Hidden House - I just bought the larger Art Toolkit palette. Like you I wasn't using my tubes of gouache enough. I had them in those air tight containers squeezed out but they cracked so much. I loved the Holbein cake pan palette so much I think because I could get my brush into the pans so well and they weren't cracking. I'm going on a watercolour trip with the International Watercolour Society to Mexico City and I wanted to take some gouache so I bought a bunch of Mijello's Titanium gouache as they were said to not crack (so far just one has). So we'll see how that goes. They can dry a bit like acrylics when applied too thickly, though. I'm just working on a video to post of this setup.

Little Hidden House: For cracked paints, you might try adding a sheet of baking paper over the paints when you close the palette. It also keeps wet paints from contaminating any lid colors you’ve mixed.

If people want a gouache-like paint that doesn’t crack I would HIGHLY recommend White Knights pan watercolors! A good selection of them have a strong gouache-like feel to them with good opaqueness, and even those that aren’t have a lot of pigmentation to them that makes it easy to achieve opaque colors with just a little bit of white or black gouache mixed in. I get mine on Blick and they even list which colors are more or less opaque. I’ve been a qouache artist for four of five years now but don’t own an actual thing of gouache paint aside from a little tube of white, thanks to these watercolors :)

Little hidden house - I've been planning for some time on trying gouache as an addition to my normal watercolour and have been trying to get a feel for how it varies from traditional watercolour practice by watching many Y/Tube videos, including almost all of Sarah Burns' output. Your channel popped up this evening as one of those fortuitous Y/Tube suggestions and your video just gained you a new subscriber here. I look forward to checking through your backlist but for now 'Thank you' for this video - we all owe so much to Y/Tubers like yourself who put out material to help people who are starting out on their individual journeys in art.

I find I needed to add honey to my Holbein to pallet them otherwise after about 6 months they completely rock and won’t even re-wet at all. Other gouache seems to rewet even if it cracks and gets a bit crumbly. Now if you use them fast enough they are a dream. They are one of the only paints I’ve ever bought that has dried in the tube. They are otherwise wonderful to use but way to expensive in Canada so I doubt I can or will get more sadly. I’ve adjusted to prefer the Himi/Miya gouache as it’s a fraction of the price. As I have a collection from years of the Dr. Ph martens Hydrus I can add to the gouache I also mix custom gouache myself from white with watercolour. This also works great to add to your gouache collection options. I also rewet my gouache often so it doesn’t ‘rock’ and using demineralized water with a touch of isopropyl alcohol prevents molding. I have multiple travel and studio pallets and also mix watercolour with gouache. White gouache is the most important as it can mix mid tone and paler tones using just white + watercolour!

The cracked paint does travel to other pans. However it’s not bad. I used mine since the summer. I found when I rewet it I could put all the cracked paint together. I like to put a little bit of glycerin in mine it helps a lot with the earth tones. Happy painting 🤗

When the gouache cracks in drying I used a drop or 2 of glycerin in the cracks. Then I use the back of a paint brush and gently push the pieces of gouache to work the glycerin between the pan and the gouache. Then I add a drop or 2 of water on top. It really works.

You use colours that you know you'll love, and I'm quite motivated to do that as well now! I don’t think the cracking is a big deal & happens throughout brands because of pigments & additives. I created a dry palette (w/variety of brands) about 7 months ago. I used full traditional pans so they aren’t as shallow in depth as the ATK pans. I use a pipette to rehydrate the pans with water beforehand & occasionally use a miniature spatula to help keep paint compressed & creamy during my painting session. Hope this helps!

Another YT artist places a drop of glycerin on the tip of a toothpick, stirring it in as they fill the palette from the tube. This apparently helps prevent the cracking by keeping the gouache moist. It also inhibits bacterial growth.

Little Hidden House,The Art Toolkit palettes are a great little invention I first saw them in a video by Sandi Hester here on KZbin and was intreaged.I have several of the folio size and I love the flexibility of them,the pocket one will be great for when you are outdoor sketching.Its inspiring to see and hear how you chose the colours and how you configured the palette to suit how you will use it,and the added bonus gift of seeing paint in real time as well.I think the looser style you are evolving is working well,but is still recognisanle as your style/look if that makes sense,still looks like a Natasha painting.Glad that you are rediscovering gouache as a medium,hope it really inspires you.(Matt) P.s I hope you and Dominic continue to get better each day.When I was configuring the pans inside the palettes itmade me think of that game Tetris!

My fix for gouache palette cracks is when I initially poor them, I put a 1-3 drops of vegetable glycerin depending on the viscosity of the paint straight out of the tube. Then I tap any air bubbles out after mixing, and try to make sure the paint touches every corner of the its pan. After that, I check the paint each day to see when it gets to a putty texture, and when that happens, I push it down with my thumb so that it's in every nook of the pan. I keep doing that until all of the paint is dry and usually there shouldn't be any cracks, sometimes there still is, I noticed W&N doesn't crack as often as other brands, but Holbein still rewets really nicely. From that point, if there are any cracks, it's usually either surface level and not very deep, or one deep one, which i've noticed with Arteza, and I haven't had any colors fall out of my palette.

Love the new palette, I use Windsor and Newton Designer Gouache and have only had a problem with the yellow ochre cracking. No cracking on any of the other colours in my 12 colour palette. Thanks Natasha for another inspiring video.

I’ve heard that to help cracking to add a little bit of liquid binder to the wet wash mix it in and then you won’t have such a problem with tracking. I’ve tried this myself with Windsor in Newton and it’s definitely worked. I know Linda from beginners mind, Art mind has done this and all so Sandy Hester to from bits of an artist life, Miranda Watson from Alkali Creek Art. Just a few drops in each colour

Just mix a drop of honey into the daniel smith gouache and it’ll settle perfect! Just a wee drop. If it’s clove honey, even better!

Just wondering if Kelly gouache can be transferred to a palette (very carefully). I have a large jelly gouache set and it’s portable, but so bulky.

I've never used that type of gouache but I can't imagine a reason why you couldn't transfer it! Unless of course you need to keep it in an airtight container?

The cracking doesn't necessarily mean that one brand is better than another, sometimes it has to do with what pigments and/or binder were used. For example, cobalts will dry up much faster than some other paints.

I love all of the brands; I'm guessing it has to do with pigments like you said, or even the binder they're using. But all of them reactivate brilliantly!

Little hidden house How do you find the Buff titanium gouache by Daniel Smith in comparison to their Watercolor?

Possibly a little more opaque, but honestly I don't think there's much of a difference between the two. If you have one, you probably don't need the other!

My gouache tubes are collecting dust because I didn’t like the way they dried up in a pallet but I have the small ArtTool Kits with the tiny pans. This would be a great way for them to get some use. Thank you 🙏 for a lovely demonstration 🎉

Thank you! My advice would be to follow your intuition and choose the colours that really excite you or make you want to paint. If you choose what you truly love, then you'll find that they go together (at least, that's what worked for me!).

Little hidden house! I have a palette full of Holbein gouache. It has dried fully and some of the colors have cracked but it has no effect on the paint or the experience of using them. None have come loose except one and I just put a tiny drop of gum arabic under it and dropped it back down. It has not come loose since. Rewetting them is great. I have the Holbein tube colors in a large mijello palette for at home. I think the art toolkit palette will be great for a travel kit because there is limited space between the colors and the lid. I would put a small super thin piece of foam in it to make sure there is no gap at all. Would be great for plein air then. I also love richness of colors from Holbein. Smoked bamboo is great. I picked some individual colors instead of getting all the iridori sets. Thanks Natasha! Love your videos.

I love love love the Holbein colours and their names! Since using the palette for the first time, some of the cracked paints seem to have stuck to the pans a little more, which is great.

I talk about that quite extensively in the video, when I show the palette after a couple of days and the cracking that occurred as it was drying.
