Real interesting how he changes from loose to full death grip on his tools. You can sense the emotion invoved with the work. Awsome stuff as always.

Ironically it's stuff like this by people like this that has killed all the passion I had and nurtured throughout childhood - praised by family and friends since I could hold a pencil, discouraged by parents when it came time to "choose my path," now even though I WANT to draw for a living, I've missed over ten years of study, refinement and practice. So I go on KZbin, see what other artists who WEREN'T passively discouraged can do, and feel inferior, worthless and hopeless. But YOU ARE a great artist, man. Don't let my diatribe hide my respect and appreciation. x

dude, this hit my soul! i feel like. always loved art. but parents told me art doesn't pay off. so they changed my whole mindset and now on the last year of college i just decide to say "fuck it, its going to be my life" so I'm just going to do art!!! I've missed out on practice but i am going to go through with it .
@davemarinas25758 жыл бұрын
Same here dude. I grew being an art enthusiast but chose a different path in college. I'd lost my passion there. Now, my passion for art is resurfacing again. We may not be able to make it for a living but at least we could try and inspire others.

You just word for word described how I feel about this.

Actually this is not the artists page but I know what you mean. I had to give up art in college as it was expected by family/friends and I became a network administrator for 25 years. Now that I am semi-retired I am diving head long back into it and wonder sometimes if I will ever catch up, but hey I am happy working at it.

I'm positively sure he's using the Zebra disposable brush pen, not the pentel pocket brush. I've got both and tested it myself. I suppose you could make those lines with a pentel, but it takes a ridiculous amount of control to make thin lines. The brush is synthetic hair and is nearly identical to a real brush so it makes big fat lines with no resistance at all.. Obviously not what Nate is achieving (for example, look the knuckles @ 1:26. It's a felt tip) The zebra brush lines nice and thin with light pressure and takes a bit of oomph to get just right looking fat lines, aka what he's doing. Try and put that kind of pressure/abuse on a Pentel pocket brush and it'll fray in .2 seconds. (if you need any proof I can poof up an example. The tombow brush pen is also a good alternative.) Both can be brought at jetpens. Go wild, folks. But also keep in mind that these pens won't make you a magical art god. It's how you use it that counts.

Really helped me, thanks
@scottadsett58039 жыл бұрын
Tangyoranges Thanks mate, I thought that I had bought a pentel pocket on the web, but got a synthetic brush nib not a felt one or indian ink. It is very hard to do soft lines too, so I use tech pens, way slow. I think to get a pentel pocket felt with extra ink it is called 'pentel pocket - soft'. Never mind, when the ink runs out - fill it with water and use water colour blocks, way less messy. Oh I had brain segery that paralyzed my left side ( Im left handed) So learning to draw with my right hand. Will check out Zebra.
@MaghoxFr9 жыл бұрын
Tangyoranges What's he using at 1:40, and then again on his face later on? Looks like an old brush with its hairs split. I'm a begginer, so I'm not familiar with most techinques yet.
@Sorrowsofthemoon9 жыл бұрын
MaghoxFr It is indeed an old brush with its hairs split! I think it's one with firm and slightly thick (thicker than your average watercolor brush) bristles. But not by much because if it's a brush too thick then you may get blobby or uncontrollable lines. I don't think that type of brush is recommended for a beginner because of its unpredictability and need for absolute control over the pressure and direction of stroke etc. He's just baaaarely scraping the surface.
@scottadsett58039 жыл бұрын
Tangyoranges I saw a really good vid with either a z brush or pocket, filled with water. The artist had a great control when blendding tombos. The spread brush looks like he may have glued the bristles.

it's called a "lead holder" you can find them at most art stores. the sharpener is for lead holders also so you can get a super fine point. i use one and i love that you can draw for a looonnngg time before you have to sharpen it again. it keeps you in the groove
@laurenceiledan710311 жыл бұрын
Those are called rake or comb brushes. They have a flat head with tiny groups of bristles sticking out from the main flat portion. You can get them for 2 or 3 bucks a pop. Sometimes they're hard to find in art stores but it's worth a shot. You can order them online to be absolutely sure. I'm sure you can cut your own but the premade ones are nice and uniform. Hope it helps since a bunch of people were asking

Remember, your art doesnt have to be limited to the image. Making your tools, including brushes, pigments/etc is an equally valliant endevor and enriches your work. 1 example. Tools required: Stick(s), Wire, tin can, aluminum can. Cut, Twist, and generally experiment with the tines. Perhaps use the tin can to make a sleeve so you can remove/replaceable custom tips. Tighten with wire. Now you have a metal brush. Dip in ink, shred up paper, canvas, whatever you like and generally be a boss. ;D

It looks like a pentel aquabrush filled with ink which is a brush head with a handle filled up with water, but you can fill it with ink too. if you are wanting something like that than i hear that the pentel pocket brush pen is nice and cheap, but they need cartridges. i just ordered one like it (Kuretake No. 40) it is more metal and you can add an ink converter which allows you to suck up any ink into it that you would like. i recommend you check out skottie young's faq for more info

I dont know if it's a "Rake Brush" or not, but the same think can be done with just about any old paintbrush. The bristles get hard and spread out like that when you don't clean them well enough.

idk but at 2:51 you can pause it and see it pretty clearly. Maybe it's a used ink brush of some kind with hard bristles... Guess we have to hatch, and cross hatch normally until we figure it out. It looks kind of make-shift tho...like hard bristles attached by tape to an old brush handle or pen handle...
