If I have an old blackboard that no longer erases the markers well, do you recommend applying the paint to the blackboard?

You could use blackboard paint. It’s just like dry erase paint but for chalk.

How do you think this would do on a chalkboard in my classroom? Prime and then a few coats of the paint stuff?

I would recommend just getting a white board to replace it. This stuff is difficult to work with and expensive. Not to mention that the results will not be as good as a factory produced product.
