It might just be me, but I’ve always imagined this song to be a reference to the harsh and contradicting standard that life puts on people to succeed and be as close to “perfect” as possible. The title being the way it feels to imagine yourself in the shoes of whatever it is that applies the standard and the lyrics being the way it feels to live without feeling like you’ve achieved it, because everyone wants to be remembered for something but in reality we’ll all eventually be forgotten and gone for good.

gods, the moment i started listening to this, i realised it's that little voice in your head that screams at you, when you have depression or anxiety. it's heart-wrenching to know that nate battles these kinds of things, lyrics like these can only be brought forth if you KNOW what it's like... i've seen arguments about a bad breakup, but even the video seems... self-hating. he doesn't look angry or prideful in this video. he looks hurt. if it's about a bad breakup, and he was singing to his ex, he'd look angry or prideful all i know is, it really shows the human aspect of nate, struggling with real life things. such a great song ♥♥♥
