This happened in a third floor apartment I was living in around 2005. It started with seeing turds and chewed plant leaves in my bathroom. Then one night on my way into the kitchen, walking past the bathroom I saw a large rat jump from the side of the bathtub into the toilet bowl and then disappear. I couldn't believe what I'd just witnessed. I set up a rat trap with peanut butter and kept the bathroom door closed. Within about a week, I opened that door to a large puddle of blood and a dead 12" long rat on the bathroom floor. I learned to take super fast deuces in the few months I was there before moving to a new place.

*run a garden hose and or a plumbing scope down the vent to do the checks and clear the lines. Then keep going with higher pressure stuff below. If visible birdsnest stuff can be seen coming out of vent stacks then manually remove, but more likely rat not birds will build nests there. Ridgid Seasnake is the droid you're looking for if you are a contractor doing troubleshooting and DVW line inspections. Expensive tool. Do NOT drop the camera display off the roof and DO use proper safety gear fall arrestors and so forth. I don't want folks dying. But reactive stuff is not better than proactive planning. Proper planning and sizing before installation reduces and possibly even eliminates certain maintenance failure scenarios from occuring to begin with. education goes a long way. sloping drain line to sewer cesspool or septic tank is of the utmost importance. Build on higher ground and if you have a basement or drained root cellar or even swimming pool or bog garden water pond outdoors... or so forth, THAT should be on higher ground than the target drain line, waste line, or sump. If random rooms have bad odors or bug problems make sure to ventilate and keep the p-traps filled. I have been in old homes that were not used for a while but did not have bad gas odors because the leaking dripping faucet(s) and toilet were actually keeping the p-traps filled. that keeps bugs out and other stuff. have been in newer buildings like say they removed a washer dryer and the washer p-trap went dry. have to keep that filled to mitigate back pressured sewer gasses and bugs.

They gnawed everything, Newspapers, skin, remnants of life, their broods... There were no mice in the mine where there were rats and woodlice. Happened to me when I was 5 or so, in kindergarten. That day other kids talked about snakes. I had heard about snakes in toilets before so when I went to the bathroom and heard something splattering inside the toilet, I immedately flushed. Well, a rat jumped out and ran towards the door. Toilets aren't filled with water like that. Only the bowl and tank are filled with water. They actually climb through the pipes, not swim through them. They only have to swim through the bowel part.

It's not often, but snakes do come up through the drains in a house. Keeping the screens in place in the tub/shower/sink will help, but you can't do that with a toilet. Also, on the roof vents, a screen should be placed over those! That's where a snake got into a friend's house, through the roof vent, now they have stainless steel screen over them!
