As an indian child i had a mongoose too ! his name was Gopal. we found him when he was like smaller than a human palm , soo small. and he lived with us for about 5-6 years before disappearing suddenly . i still remember he killed two snakes that were trying to enter the house. i don't think Gopal is alive today, but i really miss you cutie ! RIP my little friend .

Neurotoxic venom. That’s what the Indian gray mongoose is immune to. In order to kill a rattlesnake, you’d need a different sort of mongoose, as that’s a hemotoxic venom. Egyptian mongooses can safely handle both types of venom.

Mongoose are proper badasses, i got to care for and socialize with 2 at a wildlife sanctuary who were free ranging. The things i saw those 2 fight, kill and do just made my jaw drop each time.

what did you see them kill? how do you socialize with a mongoose? can they actually be tamed enough to interact with humans??

I lived at a wildlife sanctuary for a month back in September as a volunteer. I seen the two mongooses ( theres a video actually on my channel of one of them with a meerkat ) kill birds and smaller rodents by tag teaming the animal. The snakes are not out during that time of the year so I never got to see anything involving a snake and a mongoose. HOWEVER, the two would chase and bully the springbok, duiker , warthog and the baby baboons.We'd end up having to chase the mongoose away so the other animals could have a break for a bit. The can't be 100% tame, these 2 were raised by humans ( given to the sanctuary because the owners no longer wanted them ) and were still never wild even if they trusted you. I got to the point with them where I'd share my breakfast with the 2 ( they would sit on my lap or around my neck ) or if I was sitting on the around both would come up to snuggle on my lap and get a good scratch. They wouldnt let a lot of people do this. But if you were to pick there 2 up on your own time they would bite at you ( believe me, that HURTS ) or if they got into your room they would stand you off and try to get you to back down. Bottom line, mongoose would never make a good pet xD

that is very interesting! i'm a rat owner and i simply love and adore pet rats! i cannot live without them now! i put rats on my neck too. my boy rat, Balzac, is now 2 years and 5 months old, incredibly old for a domestic rat! i wouldn't think to have a mongoose for a pet! have you seen the cartoon Rikki Tikki Tavi?

I adore rats! They make fantastic pets. I had the no pet comment there for anyone who happens to read that comment and thinks "well if she can handle a mongoose i can get one as a pet!" LOL and no i havent seen it

since you have experienced mongooses firsthand, try to get your hands on this movie. you will love it! it's a nice little story about a boy and his family living in India (?) and how a mongoose saves the family from a cobra invading the house. it's a sweet cartoon, and for all ages. thank you for sharing your story about mongooses!

Rikki- Tikki- Tavi one of my favorite characters from my childhood books. Everytime I see a mongoose I think of him.
