Initially the United States supported Osama bin Laden and his group, but this support was driven by the political context and strategic interests of that time. From 1979 to 1989, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the U.S. backed Osama and many Afghan mujahideen groups with funding, weapons, and training. The aim was to counter Soviet influence, as the U.S. was keen to maintain its position in the Cold War. However, after the Cold War ended and the Soviet influence diminished, Osama bin Laden’s agenda diverged significantly. He formed Al-Qaeda and pursued his radical goals, which included opposition to American policies and Western influence. Following the 9/11 attacks, the relationship turned into full-scale conflict, with the U.S. launching decisive actions against Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. This history illustrates how international politics and alliances can shift dramatically over time, sometimes turning former allies into adversaries.
