We should never take orcas for granted! Our crew got on camera orcas in the Arctic, managing to swim where they couldn't before, but now, without ice, they have easy access. The problem is that the local species, like the narwhal, have never had a predator before and now have a powerful one, and we have no idea what will happen with these species in this new scenario.

The ocean is a vicious place. I know, I live in Florida and have been out on the deep water many a time. I've had a jewfish (goliath grouper, colossal grouper, I don't know what the appropriate name is now), come up, and eat sharks that I was reeling in, right off my hook. It's actually happened to me several times. It's a fish eat fish world out there. A couple of times, I was reeling in a fish and had another fish come after it, miss, and jump right in my boat. It's wild.

"Not normally on their menu" This is according only to human's modern knowledge. The study of orcas was not to the level of today in say 1400 AD, 500 BC. Studying ocean animals diet in detail is a modern obsession. Now that their are cameras everywhere, and the internet, and fast means of travel for humans to interact all over the world, this knowledge is becoming easily transferable.

It’d probably be the other way around if there was a case were sizes were more similar to make it an even playing field. The dolphin would be the one to make a plan, while the shark is pretty forward with a “punch to the mouth” (which would probably the equivalent to a bite on the fluke in this context). Thing is nature isn’t always an even playing field. Hence you have elephant-sized pack hunting dolphins who coordinate ambush attacks on a solo shark a quarter of their size.

@@Returntonature145 You'll have to ask them. Looking at shark anatomy, the liver is big and very nutritious and oily, while there's not much in the rest of the animal except lean muscle meat. Seals on the other hand have a lot of blubber (where most of the energy and important nutrients are). It could also be that they don't enjoy the rest of the animal and they have the luxury of being able to survive by eating what they like / the most nutritious part.

Whale Sharks and filter feeders have been seen eating Sardines and even larger fish . They have aggressively attacked fisherman's nets which had never happened before. It was discovered that a dead GW shark is literally a source of repellent for GW sharks. A dead GW was located on the ocean floor by divers. The GW sharks in the area left almost immediately & didn't return. It seems the smell of a dead GW shark repels GW sharks. It would seem to be a fantastic source of a very effective shark repellent for sharks in general, protecting divers & even surfers, among other ppl who use rhe oceans. A repellent sourced from dead GW sharks was tested & it was highly effective.

You can still call them that, while yes they are occasionally killed by them, great whites are still apex predators since in most areas where orcas and great whites overlap in range, they usually leave each other alone. For example, killer whales are frequent on the west coast and even share hunting grounds with great whites and there haven’t been any news of Orcas killing the sharks. Trophic levels are also defined by what the animal eats also. Because the great white’s diet is made up of marine animals it’s still considered an apex predator, not as high as the orca but still up there.

Humans are more dangerous to sharks than Orcas. Orcas kill sharks for food, humans kill sharks for a fin, so tragic.

Even if Orcas were half the size of a shark, the pod pounces on it like giant Piranhas, of course with massive brains. There is no escape.

Perhaps they just got mad at each other, and it was just an isolated incident, but then they got their gang to help out with the deeds!!! Maybe the orcas like that shark liver because of the abundance of iron it has!!!!!?? I didn't know all of this about Orcas, thank you for the video it is very interesting, and I've learned a lot about the Orcas diet and their need for iron abundances and energies!!! 💦💧🌊
