They never give up because deep down they'll know they'll make it like they did before and their ancestors before them. And because it's the only way forward.

Most don't make it, though. The few that do are able to reproduce. Even then, most if the eggs don't make it and many that hatch are eaten. They beat the odds just to make it to adulthood and take a shot at reproduction at all!

Nope. Most of them get eaten by bears, wolves & eagles. And most of the others would die right after reproduction since there's a tremendous lack of energy & will be tossed around riversides like trash. So it's not a selfish endeveavor. Although some of them do make it back alive. For the most of part. It's about the next generation.

atlantic salmon dont always die thousands make it back to the sea to come back later to spawn a second time, its the pacific salmon that only spawn once! in scotland when fishing in february we catch salmon kelts, which are fish that have spawned, these are usually very thin and a dirty grey colour, but when returned they will make their way back to the sea and return another year 👍
