0:11 It’s 1994 and you sitting at the town’s diner beside your job on your lunch break beside the tracks. You chat with your co-workers as the early afternoon manifest flies by. A SD50-2 and a brand new AC4400CW. 1:23 It’s 1999. You’re camping in British Colombia with your brand new RV, wife, and kids. As you’re about to fall asleep you hear the horn of the nearby BCOL train heading for town. 2:36 It’s 2017 As you wait for the next SB Silver Service to Savannah at Selma you decide to take a nap on the bench. At the last second, before you almost fall asleep, you hear your train, you hear the crossing bells, and you see the big blue and white engine round the curve as it approaches the station.

I imagine a up sd70ace pulling a coal train. My favorite railroad, the cp, unfortunately doesn't have ace's and cn has only 4 but they do have m-2s. The up is the most common for me to see ace's, and while they are distributed quite evenly through all kinds of trains, when I think of up I think of coal because they run a lot near me to a nearby large power plant.

Fantastic! I think, though, horns sound sweeter to the static listener than the train and truck driver. All he hears is the steady chord of true notes from the horns. The static listener hears echo, reverb, and the Doppler effect , often simultaneously. The trees not only echo the horns' true notes but the Doppler's notes. Listen after the truck passes the louder Doppler has a dropped lower pitch but the echo is the RAISED pitch of the sound waves moving forward then echoing back to the static listener.

The key to understanding how most railroad engineers in the US use their locomotives horns is this (For those who don't already know). One short toot = Full Stop Two short toots = Proceeding forward Three short toots = Proceeding in reverse Four short toots = Crew return to the train Five short toots = warning for animal or human on the line and every one should know this Two longs, one short, and one long = Grade crossing It would be nice if the guys who post these videos actually did this.

When a unit sat on our roundhouse (Denver) running tracks or were made up and ready for an air test, on occasion we would find Nathan Air chime horn sets missing. It was a good thing engineers would acknowledge our hand signals during an air test or they would have gone out on the road without horns. sometimes the control valve leaked and you would hear air whistling out of the manifold on the top. I once found a huge whistle off of C&S #902 (2-10-2) in the scrap pile. We took it into the roundhouse and hooked it up to the 100# house air. when we gave it the air, the blast was terrific and knocked about a ton of soot and 400 pigeons off of the rafters. The next day Bob Richardson at the CRRM had to take many calls from fans who wanted to know what steam excursion train had come to town.

The raised letter k5h sounds like the old NJ Transit locomotive used on the Gamblers Express. Many a night spent hearing that horn. Until they upgraded
Most of those old horn signals are not used anymore. Only the forward, reverse, grade crossing, and sometimes the stop horn signals are still used. Usually if there is an animal or human on the tracks, more than 5 short honks are used. Usually many short honks until the obstruction is clear.
