NATHAN CHEN GREAT PARK ICE HOLIDAY SHOW

It was an honor to once again recorded Nathan Chen at the 2020 Great Park Ice Holiday Show in Irvine, California December 13th, 2020. Can't believe how great Nathan can skate even with a mask on. This must have been so difficult for both him and others, unless you are an elite athlete which these guys are, one doesn’t realise how much oxygen they need to perform at that level. So kudos to all who performed with masks. Yes we want to see their faces just as much as they need 100% oxygen, BUT we hope to enjoy their magnificent ability for many more skates. respect. 🙏👍

So much hate in the comments. Everyone who participated at this holiday show wore a mask. This is in Southern California. Our state has the highest number of cases and ICU beds are completely full in most cities. The rules for ice rinks in SoCal is that masks are required at all times on the ice.

@@unjaded2 Are you looking at actual data? California has over 2.3 million cases, which is the most of any state (worldometer, NY Times, ca.gov). And 1.7 million come from SoCal counties, which was considered the most before Texas spiked to 1.8 million this week (worldometer, texas.gov). The adjusted rate for ICU bed availability in SoCal is 0.0% (NY Times, LA Times, ca.gov). It’s calculated at an adjusted rate because even with an extra physical bed, those hospitals would not be able to accommodate. Some ambulances have already been turned away and diverted or forced to wait hours at some hospitals (LA Times). And every rink that’s open in SoCal does have a mandatory mask policy (the Rinks, UTC Ice, KHS, East West, Iceland, Ice Palace, etc.) Btw, I’m referencing actual news and government sources and ice rinks.

For people commenting on mask, mask is simply required in many rinks in the US, on or off the ice. Skaters at all levels train for hours with mask on everyday so it’s not really a problem for them physically to perform wearing a mask.

Skating in a mask in the empty rink? Yes, a lot of ordinary people don’t wear masks there where it is mandatory but top level athlete must wear it in the empty rink? Beacause noone cares about his lungs.

The type mask Nathan wears does not interfere his breathing pattern, maybe if an N95 will cause a labored breathing but it's not. A lot of skaters too wears mask as a mandatory in some rinks especially if there's high rise of COVID19 cases, whether it's empty or not.

うわーマスクしながら滑ってる！これはすごい！めちゃくちゃ苦しいんじゃない？自分もジムでマスクしないといけないんだけど、走ったら窒息で死にそうになるもん(^_^;)ただいいトレーニングにはなるよね。にしてもあっけなくジャンプ跳ぶね。彼が跳ぶと「うっわ！」とそのすごさにびっくりするんだけど、あとで空中姿勢が気になるんだな。次の五輪は技術部門と芸術部門に分けるという話があるけど、ISUはネイサン君と羽生君両方に勝たせたい腹づもり？

The music flatlines. No highs and lows. I hope he chooses a pieces that isn't to literal or abstract that can really paint an awesome vision in the viewers mind when watching and hearing his program at the same time. Something that will bring you to the edge of your seat and back. This one just stayed pedestrian.

I love Nathan, but it is a really bad example to be wearing a mask during vigorous exercise. He is re-breathing his own oxygen depleted breath. 🥺

In many rinks here in the US you either skate with a mask on or don’t skate. I see skaters of all ages training for hours with masks and they don’t seem to have a problem. Of course it’s uncomfortable and much harder but most skaters get used to it pretty quickly.

Wearing the mask while exercising is dangerous as you are not taking in fresh oxygen Read the mask packet... it states that it doesn't protect you from virus and anyway it has an over 99% recovery rate. As an athlete he should know better but we all know this is about control nothing more. Check the stats.

​@@jsc2606 Wearing a (non ffp2 or ffp3) mask isn't to protect yourself but to protect the people around you. And of course you're taking in fresh oxygen, you breathe through the mask, that's the whole bloody point. If you want to know what it feels like to not take in fresh oxygen, you can put a plastic bag over your head. (Disclaimer: Do not actually do this, because, surprise, not taking in fresh oxygen leads to suffocation)

Pro not competitive, there is a difference. Nathan is an elite competitive skater. Also, each state has their own guidelines. CA’s COVID cases have been up for a while - the rink is probably no mask, no skate.
