In this sample lesson, Nathan East discusses tone production from the right hand. He reviews the different positions of the right hand and the different sounds those positions can produce: warm to cold depending on the hand's distance from the neck.
One of the things Nathan East wants his students to focus on when they are warming up is tone. Tone is important because "a tone is a big part of your sound and the way people identify you," says Nathan East. It is not the busy notes or the hard technical parts, but the tone that sets the famous musicians apart from the rest with their unique sounds.
If the right hand is by the bridge, the bass produces a rather percussive sound. You can hear how it sounds in the lesson. The sound is clearly different from the sound made when you pluck closer to the frets. There, you get a nice, warm sound. Different locations where you place your fingers determine the tone.
Another way to change the tone using the right hand is to use the fingernail. By using the fingernails, you can even sound like you are using a pick. With the use of the fingernails, you can use both the front and the back, or use one or two fingers. There are so many variations in tone that can be caused just with the right hand.

Never ever doubt this man's playing. His style is the blueprint of modern r&b. The maturity and simplicity yet effectiveness is what a true yoda is. His attack and sound production on this instrument is flawless. Every note he plays he makes it 'speak'. Thank you Nathan East for countless hits and bass playing which will live on!

It's amazing how many videos there are diving deep into the practicalities of right hand technique (for muting, speed, hand comfort, etc.) and not once mentioning tone. As someone fairly new to the bass, but who's played guitar and banjo for a while, that seems backwards to me. How do I make my bass sound best, and then what do I need to do to make that practical technique? Anyways, really appreciate this discussion, Nathan's clearly thought about tone deeply and his skills and feel are inspiring.
