Lucas is a competitive person. I think he genuinely cared for Elizabeth, but he also enjoyed the challenge of beating out the other, most eligible man in town. For Lucas she was the most interesting woman in town. For Nathan she has always been the only woman he wanted.

Lucas as a business man was the saloon owner. But as a man he was a gambler and enjoyed competition. I think at least at first he saw Elizabeth as a prize to be won. In the beginning it was about getting the woman. Lucas liked the idea of winning Elizabeth's affections and love even though he knew Nathan loved Elizabeth. Maybe Lucas did truly fall for Elizabeth over time, but maybe not. I don't know if Lucas truly feel in love with Elizabeth, saw her as a prize and future trophy wife, or was just settling for a safe love with Elizabeth (knowing Elizabeth had feelings for Nathan)

@@lindsayeichorn3098 Really truth is the best way I'm reminded it's just a TV show, Elizabeth was a single mother who could have lost her life in the saloon in S6. If that happened to me (as a single mom or woman period) I wouldn't have anything to do with Lucas. He has mysterious past that brought bad people to town and that Elizabeth could have lost her life. Then who would raise Jack Jr? I would think in.real life Elizabeth would have thought about this and never had anything to do with Lucas after that incident. I would have concluded Lucas is a trouble maker and had nothing to do with him. Nathan was the hero in S6 and again it it was Nathan and Bill to Elizabeth's rescue in S11. Got to remember Nathan's plan only worked because he knew Bill had things covered. In reality I'm not sure that Nathan would have ever laid down his gun as a lawman and made that decision after he knew Bill was there to go over the balcony with Elizabeth even if Nathan knew they would land in the hay and Bill was Nathan's back up.
