Great vision for young people. Take responsibility. I am a baby boomer and decided not to have children. I traveled the country with a group that later turned out to be a cult. I was raised in a Catholic community and we were taught about Jesus saving us. Catholicism breeds poverty. If I ever calm down enough, I may write about the dark side of Christianity. Their idea of unity is bogus. I finally returned to complete my Bachelor's of Arts degree at age 45. Awareness is job one. I broke free of the bondage of religion by learning how to think. Thinking is hard work. The place to begin is to improve our reading and comprehension skills. I highly recommend HOW TO READ A BOOK by Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren. The first way a person to become more responsible is to start with improving reading skills. According to Adler, schools, both private, parochial and public stop teaching reading skills at a six grade level. I appreciate Branden's Pillars of Self Esteem. However, he never mentioned the specifics of how to improve our minds by developing our reading skills for non-fiction and fiction literature. Young people need to learn how to appreciate literature and how to read a textbook. The most helpful process I found to read textbooks is called SQ5R. Cornell Notetaking is the best way I learned to take notes in school. A book called CHANGING FOR GOOD by Prochaska is the best template I am aware of to approach change.

I don't know if his views on welfare are quite right, there was no golden era in the past where people took responsibility, there were brutal institutions where people suffered immensely. That's its own subject I don't want to get into My point is that living on benefits is a terrible place to be for that individual financially and psychologically. I respect that his larger point is about trying to make people feel better about themselves, to liberate people from feeling dependent and helpless. These days political parties that want to end welfare give the impression it's purely to save money (which flows directly into their foreign tax havens) and the poor are just scum whose suffering is at best irrelevant, and at worst, deserved. Theres no notion of helping people to live better.
