I'm still amazed by this line where Taylor sung. "So I'm leaving at the side door." then he follows it with "So step right out."

this song uses lots of literature elements that make a language major like me geeks out, like: 1) metaphor, a lover = a town. Usually no matter how harsh living in a town is, you'd stay regardless. you'd just go on with your life, living through all the problems the town is giving you; harsh weather, bad traffic, bad neighbor, bad workplace, etc. Leaving a town means you're done with it, you decide nothing is worth staying anymore, or the cons of staying outnumbers the pros, and most of the time people go through long contemplation before making a decision to leave. Here, the lover is in "exile" because he was forced to leave/he could never return. 2) theatrical references. "Understudy" refers to a backup actor who trains with the main actor, always ready to take over his place the second the main actor messes up. It usually connotes negatively about someone who's not cut out to be the main actor. More obvious ones are "film" and "ending", and "side door" can either be interpreted theatrically (when you don't like a movie so you leave in the middle of the movie through the side door) or could also mean a quick escape (usually people think of front and back door, you have to walk through to go in and out, but she's using a side door to avoid the ending; back door). 3) antonyms. "defending" and "offending" sung on the same note in different verses. 4) of course, the dialogue ugh... "you never gave a warning sign" x "i gave so many signs" and "so i'm leaving through the side door" x "so step right out" Extra: - different styles of delivery: Bon Iver sings in emotional style because he's the one who got dumped, he messed up, he regretted it, he's unwilling, he wanted her back but he couldn't. Meanwhile Taylor sings in a more collected, calm style because she has moved on, she wanted the breakup, she's tired of "being his problem".

When she says “I’m leaving out the side door” it just makes me feel so sad. Cause at the beginning of the song, she tells us that she’s just a weight in the relationship [“i’m not your problem anymore”] and the fact that she says she’s leaving at the side door, to me, feels like even after their relationship ended, she still thinks of herself as someone who’s less. That even if she is involved directly in their relationship, she’s not deserving of even going out the proper exit way iykwim. So she’ll just see her way out at the side door. What superior lyrics! and the saddest thing is, this still occurs at present on any relationship. 🥺🥺

I don’t know why but i get a feeling of subtle violence. Like she couldn’t handle it anymore and left as quick as she could. First he describing her as a warrior or soldier protecting his land, his hometown and when she left he had no one to defend anymore. Then she speaks about how he is looking at her new man and sees him ready to fight and get the knuckles bloody... like he is not capable to contain his anger. And she gave him many chances but blew one after another and “add insult to injury”, he makes everything worst. She saw herself as a problem and don’t know what she is doing to offend him ( like ... again? But i didn’t do anything before you just started to overprotect me from what or who?) you were my crown, made me feel like a queen in your kingdom but i had to leave as fast as i could... now he regrets it and she is just over it. The signs were there but he “didn’t even see the signs”, he is so blinded by that sense of overprotection, jealousy perhaps? That’s why i think lyrics convey something a bit darker than it may seem at first sight. It’s not a “we have to break up” song. It’s a “I need to break up with you” and “why did you leave me?” ‘Cause there was more than pain in there, there was no communication at all maybe even a vicious relation of possession. I don’t know, it just feels that way to me.
@JenniferWithAJay Жыл бұрын
Yesss!! And you can hear the subtly held back “anger” in Justin’s (Bon Iver) voice when he answers her by saying “So step right out!” If you watch the Longpond Studio session of this song, you can see it in the way he moves when he sings that line too. Genius.
