thanks so much for the video wish I found it sooner as there are not many avaliable with double vanos timing in great detail. like yourself I bought a 325i cheap with a blown head. tore it all down had the head ground (long aluminuim heads wrap easy ) and I put oversized gasket in. I've had the car apart 4 times now in which I believe is timing related. when I hit 40mph the cams don't seem to advance and car falls flat on its face. I never used the jig you have in the video had people describing they were not needed as long as the helical splined cup showed 1mm of spline after 8 shops wouldn't take the car and the 1 shop that would wouldn't give me a ball park estimate, had me by the balls... I've never had anyone work on my cars but these German cars are a different breed. ended up buying the jig and will use your video for reference thank you again. will keep you posted

+crackerjacker4 I have not done this without the vanos jig, did you drill and time sert the head bolt holes in the bock? that was guaranteed your problem to start, these have a metal layerd head gasket that never blows.did all the head bolts torque down to around 65ft lbs?

Usually a head gasket problem will smoke once warmed up, if you see coolant you have a coolant leak not a blown head gasket, smell the exhaust when you start it does it smell sweet like coolant or does it smell like oil? or like nothing?

Geoffrey Taylor my 2 cents, had the same problem, oil not milky, car not smoking at all, I was losing coolant, I pour dye on colant use the UV light, open the oil cap filer and saw a bunch of coolant inside

About to pull the head off my 2003 325Ci ragtop. It has a blown head gasket so I'm taking it in for machining. Been watching all the m54 vids you posted trying to get ready. Thanks so much for the help! A couple questions, when I take the head in, should I bring it to the machine shop bare or with all the valves and springs still in the had? And are the Felpro head gaskets any good? What gasket do you like? Thanks!
@NathansBMWWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
James Pennington it won't be a blown head gasket , it will be either stripped head bolt threads in the block or a cracked head, these heads never warp a machine shop is not needed but a different head might be
@Jamespennington717 жыл бұрын
Ah ok. I know the studs do tend to pull threads and I was planning to buy and install the time-certs kit you did a video on. Once I've got the the VC off I was going to check the torque and see if any have pulled loose, as per your other video. So I likely shouldn't need it machined then? Any common places to look for cracks in these heads?

More than likely will not be able to get a torque wrench on the main tensioner, I use the fan tool wrench or a adjustable wrench and tighten it like you would a spark plug, hand tighten to snug then another 1/2 turn with a wrench or until it is comfortably tight , make sure you clean the aluminum washer and it should seal fine, I never have any problems using this method, the correct torque is 52 ft pounds but I find torquing it to that spec might make it really difficult to get off if you do not have a 32 deep socket
Hi Nathan, comparing your videos to my m52tu (2000 z3 2.8) it looks like the helical spines on the end of my camshafts are not oriented the same as in your videos thus the timing components do not seem to line up the same as it does in your videos. from what I've seen and read, the front of the notches (missing tooth) in the helical cam splines should be at 12 o'clock in relation to the top of the head when locked in top dead center but on mine they seem to have been installed incorrectly or have spun from the proper position. they seem to be more at 11:30 for the exhaust cam and 11 o'clock for the intake cam when compared to the top dead center position in relation to the head and the square ends on the other end of the camshafts. Should I loosen the bolts ( they are tightly torqued) at the end of the cam splines and tighten the splines back down with the front of the notches in the 12 o'clock position in relation to the top of the head (tdc)?, I was thinking a metal straight edge would work from what I've read that others have done. What is the best way to do this? Have you ever seen them spin out of time like this or is this a sign that they were installed incorrectly during previous ownership. I would love to hear your experience on this, Thanks.

Hi Nathan. thank you for the info. I had a overheated engine 2002 x5 3.0. I replace the head gasket and a rebuilt head, which came with the cams and valves. Nathan, there is an interesting issue I have found with setting the engine at TDC. If I use the rear locating pin as you describe just under the starter motor, my timing mark on the front camshaft chain cover is out to the belt drive pulley. Not by much but certainly out. To look at, it would be around 30mm out of alignment. Can you explain which TDC I should take? The rear pin position, which to me appears to be wrong as it doesn't seem to be TDC according to the motion/rotation of the engine or should I take the front alignment position according to the front cover mark and the pulley marking, which to me appears more correct to TDC ? I'm kinda thinking that for the sake of timing, one is preferred to the other. Is that true ? Hope I haven't got you confused :)
@NathansBMWWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
+Antonio Di Cappo Well i would say at this point use the locating pin, the timing marks on the pulley could be wrong due to it being reinstalled wrong if someone has had it apart, it is a 2 piece pulley, all the flywheels are made the same so i doubt the flywheel would be wrong, just make sure you have the pin in the correct flywheel hole, the pin should go in over half way and when you try to turn the crankshaft with a rachet it should not move at all either direction, if it does you have the wrong hole in the flywheel.

Question.... I bought an amazon $75 dual vanos timing plate(gauge/tool). Problem is, it looks a bit generic. And there are set-screws, to set the distance of the plungers, that contact the gear cups. The prob is that they are square ended screws, but the plungers that determine the distance for the cap placement of the gears..... well that area is circular. So first I’m not sure if the set screws should be loose or tight.???? And second, how can I know if they are gonna place the vanos cups at the right depth? Does anyone have a measurement of how deep each of those two cups should protrude passed the edge of the cylinder head block, where the vanos unit is later bolted??? Aka.... how far past that edge should each one be ???? My “tool” did not come with any instructions or measurements . Somebody help . Really worried about if this tool was built right.
