Liquid Snoop for finding gas leaks

This is my favorite method for leak checking gas lines. The snoop applicator applies liquid soap bubbles with out creating any bubbles,. It is very fast for finding large and small leaks.

Looks like a great product. Think I'll try it. Aren't they supposed to use the yellow Teflon tape for gas fittings?

+The Air Conditioning Guy I used to use teflon tape on gas line years ago. The problem with teflon is that the threads have to be perfect. Any burs will just tear up the tape. Pipe dope NEVER leaks. Tefon is good on pilot connections and compression fittings. Also teflon can be used with pipe dope on 3 inch and larger threads. This allows the pipe to be easier to unscrew say 20 years later after the pipe dope normally hardens. Teflon is applied first to only last 1/2 of the threads, then dope is applied over the teflon. I have made some really nasty looking threads hold perfectly fine with pipe dope. I do quite a few natural gas conversion. So, I needed to get my leak rate down to 1 joint per 1000 or so.

Polytetrafluoroethylene tape is all made out of the exact same compounds. The difference between gas rated tape and standard p.t.f.e tape is only the gauge of thickness. Still if your going to do it using the correct code of regs and standards. Gas specified tape is a must. As an engineer your responsible, if you use it. 🙄. I'm pretty sure in some states any form of p.t.f.e tape is against code of regs. So it probably shouldn't be used, only specified dope compound.

Will this only work in detecting gas leaks or will this help with air pressure testing on black iron pipe?

I thought flare connections you're not supposed to use pipe dope or tape on the threads since the threads alone will be pulling that flare down to make that mechanical seal. Adding pipe dope or tape could lessen the rigidity of that mechanical force that's pulling the two connections together.

I have done it both ways for many years. I have zero leaks using nylog on refrigeration flares and pipe dope on natural gas flares. The manufacturers want dry flares. However, I have to go with experience on this one.

How do you fix the first leak in the pipe? If you turn the pipe to tighten on top, doesn’t the lower end loosen?

I had to unscrew the pipe and apply new pipe dope. then I screw it back together and tighten it. It doesn't take long. not every joint has to be unscrewed.

Improperflare. Nice stuff but kinda messy. Maybe if you don’t pull the spout out much it would be better. Good example of what a gas leak looks like with soapy solution.

last I knew you don't pipe dope flare fittings. if the flare is done right and tightened it won't leak. in some areas white Teflon tape is not acceptable on gas pipe. they make a different colored Teflon that is acceptable. We are only allowed pipe dope on gas fittings in my area.

Good point. All the flare manufactures say to keep the connections dry. However, applying a small amount of dope will fill in the scratches that are inevitably on the mating surfaces. I have probably fixed 100 flare nut leaks. If the joint isn't cracked, dope or nylog fixes it every time. I try not to use tefon on gas pipe. It leaks a lot more than dope. The flare firing won’t leak unless flared improperly. A little dope on the threads doesn’t hurt.

Is there a fluid which changes color when leak is there?

The snoop make a white milky micro bubble color in small leaks. Otherwise, all I know about are the UV dyes. But, they are 100x LESS sensitive than a good sniffer.
