Spirituality and ethics are core values that have shaped human life from time immemorial. However, as societies and their institutions progress and go through ebbs and flows, so does the relevance of such core values. Currently, business entities and social systems are going through challenging times. The global crisis in banking and the economic recession have brought to light several issues arising out of bad leadership, personal greed and unethical practices.
This reminds us of the ancient Indian maxim laid out in Manu-smṛti, “Dharma protects those who protect it and destroys those who try to destroy it.” The unfolding business crises and scams have exposed the leadership crunch in organizations. The current practice of leadership seems unable to resolve any of the major issues facing businesses. Furthermore, this has once again brought to the forefront the role of spirituality and ethical and moral values in all domains of the society including business.
This presentation begins by demonstrating the role of ancient Indian wisdom in addressing spiritual, religious and secular issues that society faces today. By secular we mean a set of ideas that help us conduct our life sensibly from a day to day living perspective. Taking specific examples from the Upaniṣads, the Gītā and the works of Ādi Śankarācārya, we will show how specific implementable ideas can be culled out to solve some of the contemporary social and economic problems. We will also present the notion of inspirational leadership as envisaged in Bhagavad Gita.
Knowledge of Vedic lore is as relevant today as it was at that time and it is important for us to develop this appreciation and distill newer insights to solve some the contemporary problems such as greed, mental stress and job burnout and work satisfaction, motivation and peaceful coexistence with the nature.
