The partial contradiction about militarism between this and the previous video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpjIanmmq6ebn6s) is explained by the fact that when they are sufficiently big, empires may stop their expansion. On the other hand, the imperial project of a state can only emerge through military expansion.

Can the concept of empire be separated from the concept of imperialism? Are there real examples, in history, of empires that were not imperialist? Can we call Nazi Germany an imperialist nation(-state) rather than a nationalist empire?

Hi! Very good questions, but they are very theoretical, so also the answers will be theoretical and imaginative. You won’t be able to go around and make these claims (below), but provided the context, the reasoning behind them makes them kind of logical. The concept of empire cannot be separated from imperialism unless it resigns and becomes a multi-National state where no group is superior to any other. Nazi Germany can be called an imperialist state nation for sure, although we did not see how a Nazi German led Europe would have worked. The baseline of this debate and of this opposition is that once a state is “just” a multi-National state it means that liberal democracy chips in and rights of minorities are respected. A non imperialist empire example could be the European Union but you see how being non-imperialist is de facto also not an empire anymore and does not aim to be acknowledged in those terms. As a matter of fact, there is not a European Union army, although NATO works often as a proxy.

@@UnderstandingPoliticsThank you very much. In your book Capire i Balcani orientali, you deal with the eastern Balkans. On Italian Amazon, I noticed a similar book dealing with the western Balkans, apparently by different authors. Unfortunately there was not an ebook version of either. Would you know if digital versions are somewhere on the internet? Thanks.
