I would hear the Sri Lanka national anthem as a child in Mumbai when my Dad would tune in to Radio Ceylon that later become Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. The indian anthem writer cosidered india as a male. So thats why he inclued musculine words like " janana gana mana adhinayaka " instead of " matha ".

@@p.5629 you are correct in understanding the words, but he is not referring to INDIA and 'Adhinayaka', he is referring to "Bharata Bhagya Vidhata" i.e. God / whoever is the 'Bhagya vidhata' of India, as Adhinayaka. India is always referred to as "Bharat Mata"...Same as in Sri Lanka😄😁
