The Cancer Resource Center at Medical City Dallas salutes these survivors and their stories with a song by Texas Hill, "Darkest Sky." Here are some of our survivor stories:
"Giving back as a cancer survivor makes me feel that all the time I lost while I was sick and in trauma is being given back to me by God in greater ways than before I was diagnosed." - Jill
"I'm grateful to the cancer survivorship team, because if it wasn't for them, my husband and I would have been lost." - Margaret
"Being a cancer survivor means you fought in a war and through the misery and fear you held onto hope and faith that allows you to move forward, so you can bring courage to others." - Salli
"Throughout the past year I had friends call frequently, just to visit. Being able to just visit and not having to rehash everything going on in my life was a saving grace. My suggestion to anyone who has a friend or relative dealing with any kind of cancer, or for that matter any problem, is just to let them know you are there to visit, nothing more. Then if you see a way you can help, do so." - Martine
"To all the newly diagnosed - allow yourself to grieve what you've lost, but be patient. In time you'll see that you have gained so much more than what you may lose. Then get up and dust yourself off - you have a whole new world to live." - Stacey
"He put my hands in his three and a half year ago and said, 'We got this,' and we found a love, hope and faith far beyond our wedding vows! I am a survivor because of him." - Salli
"Even after 5 years, there are daily reminders that will never go away, but I am still here. Here to help others now. If my story and my experiences can help someone else navigate around some of the pain and sorrow that accompanies a cancer diagnosis and treatment, then I am living a purposeful life." - Tonya
"It means so much to me to give back to others. My mission in survivorship is to give others hope, inspiration and love. The lord has blessed me, and I want to help others with my time. I will be going strong with it every year until I can't go anymore." - Marilyn
