National Gallery of Indonesia

National Gallery of Indonesia is one of the technical executive units in the Ministry of Education and Culture, under the patronage of the Directorate General of Culture. This institution was established in 1998 and officially opened on 8th May 1999 by Mr. Yuwono Sudharsono, Minister of Education and Culture at that time. The National Gallery of Indonesia’s building that has the characteristics of Dutch colonial architecture is located at Koningsplein Cost No. 14 (now Medan Merdeka Timur 14, Central Jakarta)
National Gallery of Indonesia conducts study, conservation, safeguarding, exhibition, and publication of artworks such as paintings, sketches, graphics art, sculptures, ceramics, graphic design, illustration, photography, craft, installation art, and other alternative media. The artworks that become state collections are more than 1.800 artworks by Indonesian and international artists, covering any expressions, forms, media, technics and artists’ background as well as the excellence of each artwork. Some of those collections are presented periodically at the permanent exhibition, temporary exhibition, as well as at the travelling exhibition.
As an art center as well as exhibition center, National Gallery of Indonesia has a role to develop public appreciation on art as well as to accommodate artists’ potential to exhibit their artworks with a good curation principle and exhibition management. National Gallery of Indonesia becomes a kind of development quality barometer in advance Indonesian art also becomes a facilitator for Indonesian artists within the international relations. Specifically, the National Gallery of Indonesia has a role in growing an understanding, comprehension, creativity and innovation, also affection towards the works of the nation’s culture.
