Very interesting to see there were no comments since published in 2012. Anyway, I agreed with your observation about Taiwanese cinema. As you can see there is still an unspoken nationalism between native Taiwanese and Nationalist Taiwanese.

Very, very great and precise observations indeed :-) The motion picture industry of Taiwan underwent very lively transitions: from the syrupy romantic dramas, martial arts flicks and propaganda-oriented productions that were dominant during the era of Chiang Kai-shek, Taiwan's film industry later made an amazing comeback, or shall you say, transformation with works that have much more depth, more profound messages coupled with very high production values, and have won international acclaim with an appeal that cuts across all boundaries. This transformation equally paved the way to what you may call the Taiwanese New Wave, which came in two phases, in 1982-1990 and from 1990 up to 2010. These featured works by young, talented directors of those eras yet that carried out a strong message that, aside from emphasizing that sense of pride of being Taiwanese, these New Wave flicks have also proven that the Taiwanese audiences' tastes have changed, and moved up with the times :-)

In fact, I would very much like to see more of true Taiwanese film with less Chinese Nationalist influenced compositions.
