I saw a reaction of Psycho and the woman asked, "Is that Jamie Lee Curtis? How old is she anyway?" It was her mother, Janet Leigh. Jaimie Lee Curtis is a 2nd generation Scream Queen. And I just realized Jaime Lee Curtis isn't a hyphenated surname. Lee is her middle name... And of course Janet Leigh wasn't her given name.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is a must too. If you want another road trip movie, I highly suggest Little Miss Sunshine. The dude behind the counter in Colorado is the older brother of Bill Murray (Brian Doyle-Murray). He also makes an appearance in Christmas Vacation as another character. That desert area is Monument Valley, Arizona and it has been in so many movies. One of the most notable shots is in the movie Forrest Gump for me. The truckster was a modified Ford Town Squire LTD Station wagon. The blue car at the pump was an old AMC Eagle. They were popular back in the day. If you have watched Married With Children, then you have seen the truckster in the opening credits getting on the Interstate.

It was actually pretty common for old computers to connect to the TV. You'd plug 'em in to the antenna socket and then manually tune a spare channel to the right frequency, like tuning into a TV station - kids today don't know they're born with their built-in screens and dedicated monitors :). Good movie this, funny but with a bit of an unhinged edge to it. "European Vacation" is good too but it's either "The Three Amigos" or "Fletch" that are my favourite Chevy Chase movie.

People don't have the context of the National Lampoon, a magazine from which this and other movies were spawned. The magazine was way more scabrous and vicious than Animal House, Class Reunion and the Vacation films. The story which this is based on is much darker.

My family went everywhere, always camping, big old' van that slept 6! From DC bottom of Grand Candyon to LA to Toronto and all points in-between, almost every National Park! it was amazing! Peeps also don't forget: Visa/MasterCard were accepted almost no where back then...very rare to find someplace....so on long trips, the SIX of us we'd have to eat at Phillips 76 gas stations!

3:14 That's called run-on or dieseling. Cars from before the '80s could do that after you turned it off. It could do that for an embarrassingly long time. You would have to stand there and wait for it to stop before you could walk away. 23:10 That's Monument Valley in Arizona. Definitely worth a visit. A lot of movies have been filmed there. Better Off Dead is an '80s comedy you would love. Very quotable.

I read the short story this was based on a couple of years before the movie in National Lampoon's magazine. The original story was set in the 1950s, and the destination was Disneyland. The part with the dog actually made me laugh when the cop pulled them over. It didn't translate as well in the movie but was very funny the way it was written. In the end, he bought a real gun and shot Disney in the leg at his house before being hauled to jail. If you can find the original story, it's worth a read.

Travel was an adventure back then. Even though we have the internet today, old timers like me still do the meticulous and elaborate planning for any trip. Back then everything was done either by mail or over the phone. It was a time when there were paper airline tickets and no cell phones. I took many solo cross country road trips in the 80's. As an adult and when I look back I have fond memories of them but I also say "How the eff did I survive without the technology.".....lol

I live a couple miles from old Route 66, near where it starts in Chicago. There’s still a chunk of it left here, before it merges onto I-55, where there’s still some of the past left. There’s this little 24 hour diner off it in McCook that’s simply the best. Go in at 10pm and you’re seated by Mary, she takes your order, cooks it and brings it to the table. The other one that’s rather famous is Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket, another throwback from a time when driving Route 66 was done.
