Wow. What a great video and what a stunning museum-mansion I would like to visit next time I'm back east.

Beautiful. Illustration is most certainly art. I live in England but along with my husband have visited America several times and we both love the art we have had the pleasure to see in America. Above all we think the work of Norman Rockwell is amongst the best. Thank you .

The photo of the man on the window seat that is reported to be Arrow Collar Man Charles Beach is actually J.C. Leyendecker's brother Francis Xavier Leyendecker. The photo is from a Home Magazine circa 1920's that shows the interior of the Leyendecker estate in New Rochelle, NY, and was a several page article.

I love this. I've planned to visit this museum for years now, but haven't got around to it yet. It's on my bucket list, however. Love that Whoopi loves illustration art as much as I do. I'm also thrilled that the art world is beginning to finally come to it's senses as to what art is. I'll never forget an art professor of mine telling me that my art was too pretty and more like illustrations that fine art. It discouraged me for a while, but no more.

AsI watch this video again I'm so thankful for the NMAI. They are preserving and presenting American art at its finest and giving these great artists the respect they earned while entertaining and often educating us with their visual stories. This makes me want to get to the museum as soon as I can. Anyone who appreciates art has to put this on their "must see" list.

i'm still waiting for a really great analysis of the public fall of leyendecker and the rise of rockwell in american illustration. leyendecker was the most fascinating subversive in every american home - imho.

Illustration is Art! I love illustrations even more than paintings. A childhood friend of mine is an excellent illustrator who has been invited to illustrate books, but sadly she didn't take up the offer. :(

Thank you for this fantastic overview of American Illustration and it's principle founders. Brief but informative, and classy too. Are there any sources you recommend I can pick up to learn about this topic? My grandpa Wally was an illustrator for a studio in NYC called the CEC (Charles E. Cooper Studios), so I am really drawn to this form of art. I hope you come out with more videos!

Io e mia moglie collezioniamo libri illustrati e arte popolare.

When I was a kid the idea that illustration would "arbitrarily" be excluded from artistic consideration would have been completely absurd. I must admit, as I grow older, and see the direction America seems to be heading in, I'm more and more sympathetic towards the idea of rejecting the artistic legitimacy of corporate and commercial art. It's hard to say I can ever be completely converted in the face of such beautiful work, but I must admit there's merit to doubt, regardless.

Illustration not being considered art is like a green apple not being considered an apple cause the skin isn’t red.

Hah! Laurence Cutler begins by defining illustration as pictures to be reproduced in books and magazines. A few minutes later Whoopi Goldberg says Michelangelo, who never made pictures to be reproduced in books and magazines, was one of the greatest illustrators. Time to get your act together.
