In this video, I take a brief look at the dispossession of Native American lands and the creation of Glacier and Yosemite National Parks. Through these two parks I analyze the often overlooked colonial history of National Parks.

Remember, we have to simultaneously recognize the turbulent and sometimes violent pasts of National Parks while also appreciating the National Park Service's recent efforts. The NPS has made solid headway in recent years connecting with Native American nations and rolling back past colonialist tendencies.

As a young Navajo in Arizona whose going to be on the North Cascades trail crew I say AHÉHEE! "Thank you!" For making this video acknowledging the governments greed filled hypocrisy. Hopefully conservation corps like Ancestral Lands Corps will help Native Americans get back into being stewards of the lands they once called home, so that the NPS, USFS & BLM will all be Native American/POC entities. Missing 411 & The Bermuda Triangle of Yosemite is also another interesting topic on NP's.

Woah, I had no idea! Glacier National Park has long been on the top of my list of places to go, but now I'm not sure how to visit while being aware of this history and respectful. Thoughts?

Glacier used to hire natives to be present in full garb within view of the park and around the area, but not allowed within the park itself. It was good for tourists to see the native people "in their element" so to speak, with make-shift villages made up for entertainment purposes, all the while the people are being denied their rights to the land. It wasn't only native people who lost their lands to the national parks either. Frontiersmen and small villages that existed around those areas were caught up in it and now people didn't have the right to hunt, fish, graze, mine or log the woods outside their home. This was the case with virtually all national parks. That said, glacier is absolutely beautiful. If you go, get out of your car and go for a long hike, even over-night backpack. Its lovely.

I would like to show this to my elementary students. It is a powerful and clear message of the history of the National Park system that is rarely told. I am wondering if there is a way to get a copy of this without "Blair Witch Project" linked at the end?
