I was an apprentice at the age of 18, on a very small wage. I used to work an extra Saturday every week to make sure I had enough to pay my mother suitable rent, to make sure I could still feed myself and run a car to get to work. If you told me back then after working 6 days a week that I would also work a Sunday! I wouldn't have had the energy or dive to finish my apprenticeship. So I worry for those younger people already in employment or have a family that this will be a responsibility too far.

As someone who is in my mid 50s and while I have grandchildren under 18 they luckily don't live in the UK. I really couldn't be more disgusted with this plan. As for parents being prosecuted, this genuine question are there any other circumstances parents can be prosecuted solely based on the actions of their offspring who are over 18? I would add when she talks about "when you talk to anyone that joined the military the found out something about themselves" .... She didn't speak to me.... I was in the RAF over 6 years... As someone who as gone on to fairly significant management roles, the one thing I learnt was from one specific officer pretty much how to not manage anyone, other than that honestly I think paying me to sit on a beach in Spain for 6 years would have taught me as much about myself and likely been cheaper.

I've served 14 years (so far) and find this just absolutely ridiculous. For a lot of the roles in the armed forces (other than cannon fodder) it takes a lot of training to be capable of the job. Often over a year's worth of training. That's why there is a return to service minimum contract period. To actually be good at your job can take years of experience on top of that. How can it possibly make sense to flood the military with incapable, inexperienced 18 year olds who likely have no desire to be there or commit to the best interests of the military. This will only burden an already stretched thin military and will be nothing but counter productive. Tory political suicide. Absolute idiots.

At 82 I was overjoyed to miss Conscription in the 60's as my many friends, acquaintances and hundreds of workmates on the railways where I was a fireman. With one exception but against him two young men I knew had gone on the Lam to avoid conscription. The US military said a year or more ago the UK Armed forces are no longer a serious force. So that was under the Tories. Labour put 2.5% into our armed forces the Tories 2% or less. This is what the Tories are trying to cover up.

The Royal Navy is similar, but 30 weeks at BRNC Dartmouth. The Army is 44 weeks at RMA Sandhurst. None of the services has the training capacity to put people through Officer training just for fun only for them to complete their 52 week compulsary duration and just leave. Without any officer *branch* training they'd only be basic soldiers with nicer hats anyhow.

The medical examination that includes physical and mental fitness is gruelling, so if conscripts don't pass, then the military won't have them. Generally and I know this from dealing with them, a great many young people are just not fit enough to join the military, compulsory joining or otherwise. I doubt the Conservatives ever even considered that.

And the NHS don't let anybody onto the wards without weeks of training and induction, DBS checks, supervision by already overworked staff etc There's literally nothing untrained 18 yr olds could do of any use at the weekend as only inpatient facilities are open and without all of the above the only thing you're qualified to do is make coffee.

I was an apprentice at the age of 18, on a very small wage. I used to work an extra Saturday every week to make sure I had enough to pay my mother suitable rent, to make sure I could still feed myself and run a car to get to work. If you told me back then after working 6 days a week that I would also work a Sunday! I wouldn't have had the energy or dive to finish my apprenticeship. So I worry for those younger people already in employment or have a family that this will be a responsibility too far.

The primary purpose of the armed forces is to train servicemen to operate weapons with the ultimate aim of killing people. In the event of a foreign war (e.g. Iraq / Afghanistan / Bosnia), young people signing up to what’s essentially being sold as a year’s well-being and fitness scheme, should be aware that once trained and with their year of service completed, they may the first be invited to serve alongside professional servicemen in a future war. The decision to sign up should not be taken lightly, even if the only alternative is doing something that appears less exciting in the local community.

It's digusting because 18 year olds are already given a lower minimum wage. How are they supposed to afford to move away from abusive parents, raise children, etc?.... And as an Irish person from Belfast the British army isn't popular...
