This was just brilliant, I became quite emotional watching it. So many beautiful works, a favourite would have to be the Arnolfini portrait. Well done all! Looking forward to the next episode.

When I think about the years I lived in London, the National Gallery is a prominent part of my memories. Ducking in to do a drive by of some masterpieces on a weekend then topping it off with a coffee at the top of the steps, looking straight down Whitehall, towards the Abbey and Westminster. Magical.

Literally, millions of people all over the globe are grateful for those who helped bring about the NG. From 1994-1996 almost every Wednesday afternoon was spent at NG learning as to why art is so incredibly important to understanding what it means to be human… thank you…

Thank you for enlightening us about the origins of this precious sanctuary of beauty and history, and infinite gratitude to the people who contributed to its birth, its growth and, of course, to the people who have the privilege of currently working to maintain, preserve, study, increase and disseminate its content and its container. I look forward to the second video. Congratulations on your 200th anniversary and may it celebrate many more centuries!

This 200th anniversary of the gallery and its extraordinary history does not just only represent the gallery, but a tribute to art itself; the talent and sentiment that is unveiled by the human hand, mind and soul; as well as the artist’s viewer, a reason a gallery consisting of the largest collection collection of paintings of the nation was made. So the viewer can get an immersive, intimate and deeply personal experience with the artist, with starful eyes that wander up and down the strokes of paint in dire awe…

I wish there could be a 3d tour for people like me, I'll never ever be able to visit there, I wish that I could appreciate it all as if I'm walking in there.. All people that had contributed to buy paintings, find paintings, hide paintings in the war time, they'll never be forgotten❤

Full Documentary: 200 Years of the National Gallery Ep1 - Foundations (1824-1900) 1841pm 10.11.24 excellent. whether you agree with the art history dished out with the imagery or no... a fine place to spend a few hours, i feel. do i understand? not really... but then there's nothing being said that hasn't been said before. so, maybe, indulge with the innate autodidact once in a while...

"Key works in our collection of western European arts" while the collections of Chinese, Egyptian and African arts, which make up of sigficant parts of the gallery and speak volumes about the UK's colonial past, are left unmentioned. I thought the National Gallery would have the decency to face its own dark past at this critical time. Guess they are below that.
@nationalgallery24 күн бұрын
Hi Mike, our collection focuses on Western European painting, from the artists of late medieval and Renaissance Italy, to the French Impressionists. In this documentary we also share some of our recent research into the role that slavery has had in the history of the National Gallery too.
