Thank you so much for your videos! I just started practicing with my High Spirits flute about two weeks ago. I am already trying to teach myself that incredible piece you played at the beginning of this video! Why not aim high! I am also practicing the basics. I am really looking forward to more lessons from you!

The rim blown flute i have takes very little air to blow the sound. But its a very quiet flute sound. The end blown flute is louder, and can blow in it stronger to get sound.

I have just purchased my 2nd Jonah Thompson flute; I sold the first one because I felt like I hit a wall with my progress since I am self taught. This video is great and I look forward to learning more from you. I am very interested in the NAF and native American Culture. Could you suggest any books? Thanks and great video!
@WhisperingLightMusic10 жыл бұрын
Thank you D.P.F.! There a couple of good books. One is "The Native American Flute - Understanding the Gift 2nd Edition" by John Vames. It is an interactive guide with CD, instructional text, and 25 songs. It's written for six hole flute but will work for 5 as well. The "6th" hole which is the fourth hole from the bottom is only used for a couple of chromatics. Another good book is R. Carlos Nakai's "The Art of the Native American Flute". Hope to have more tutorials up soon - we have them filmed but need to finish editing. We have 9 fimed so far and more to come. Check back! Kev BTW - more music and info on our website at www.WhisperingLight.com. Ho!

Hi, I am a musician and I'm in love with the sounds of the Native American flute. I went to the Jose Cabezas website, so they offered flutes in different keys. What is your suggestion on this? Which one should I get?
@WhisperingLightMusic8 жыл бұрын
Hola Javier - sorry for the late reply - I've been both performing and moving at the same time! F#-minor would be the traditional "grandfather" key. But if you want to play with other musicians (guitars, piano, etc) I would suggest a more friendly key like A-minor or E-minor. Then you can jam with friends! Also keep in mind that the deeper bass and contrabass flutes are good for playing solo on more ambient songs but don't cut through the mix in a full band. In a band, you want a flute in the middle to upper octave so it stands out above the other instruments. Happy flutings!

Your inspiring thank you. Could you tell me what a Kiowa Flute is..what defines it's sound? hope to hear from you and look forward to more Vidios on the Native Flute
@WhisperingLightMusic9 жыл бұрын
Timber Tone Thank you! I am not directly experienced with Kiowa flutes but here is a link to a flutemaker who has a video about a Kiowa flute. I will caution you on one thing: As you Google and peruse KZbin pay attention if the presenter states "Kiowa flute" or "Kiowa INSPIRED flute". There a quite a few flute makers making their own designs based on a traditional design but do not possess the experience nor history of the traditions. There are many China knock-offs and I even know stores in California where middle-eastern owners are selling Native "antiques" that are assembled by their families at the dining table (he tried to sell me a terrible flute for $650 and said it came from an old man on the rez but it was homemade in the storeowner's garage). I say all this as there are many flute makers who do not possess the history nor knowledge about Kiowa flutes that you are looking for. Many tribes had similar flutes but it is in the context of history and customs that there are many variances in what is played and HOW it is played. I would find reputable Native flute makers to whom you can ask your questions because a traditional flute maker will have the knowledge or know where you can find out more. Hope this helps - Good luck! kzbin.info/www/bejne/sICpqImBZ6mid5o

@WhisperingLightMusic8 жыл бұрын
+Hagen Das The flute I am using to teach with in this video is an Am Native American flute made of oak from Jose Cabazas. Native American flutes are based on the minor pentatonic scale unlike Tibetan or Japanese flutes. Hope that helps and thank you Terry Two Bears for the great compliment!

Is it terribly wrong to feel more comfortable holding ANF with my hands opposite of the norm...I am more comfortable with my right hand above my left. Please advise. I am just beginning to learn to play.
@WhisperingLightMusic9 жыл бұрын
Playback007able Just my opinion but I think if it works for you and you're getting the sound and playability you want I'ld say go for it! NF is especially about spirit and feel. If your technique gives your heart and spirit a path of beautiful expression then what would be the harm in that?

Hi. I just wanted to know if you have any advice on which flute to buy? Which flute are you playing in this video? Thanks, such a beautiful sound.
@WhisperingLightMusic6 жыл бұрын
Although F# is the original "grandfather" key, I would suggest an A mid-range flute (remember ALL flute keys are minor scale so "A" means"A minor") because you can play easier with guitars and keyboards and the breath control and fingering is easier to learn on a mid-range flute and then expand into lower or higher flutes. VERY IMPORTANT: I recommend buying a 6 hole flute, not 5 hole, and REMOVE the leather strap that is usually placed on the fourth hole on a six hole flute as a "cheat". The strap does make playing easier at first but you develop bad habits where your finger is not precisely covering the hole (because the strap is doing it for you) and you have squeaks and squeals. I'm actually working on a tutorial about 5 hole versus 6 hole flutes. I also have references to flute makers at www.whisperinglight.com/native-flutes - Good Luck!
