Im Navajo, registered independent voter. It's always interesting that native peoples continue to complain about a government of the past. They don't see history changing and developing before their eyes. Only in recent years, Native are finally being included in US government decisions. Those decision will ultimately affect the reservations. With Trump, there will be budget cut to Native benefits, less grants, eliminate general assistance, food distributions, water rights, land rights, etc. Natives seem to take the back seat of the government they hate. That allows others to make decisions for their rights. Rather than working on making active changes from those 1800's outdated treaties.

Excellent reporting, thank you! I am a 76 yr old white woman who was born in Fort Wayne, IN and was married to a black man who was born in Boston for 30 years and we lived in Los Lunas. He was a long haul trucker who died in 2020. His beloved Grandmother was a civil rights activist in MA. He loved NM!! I always understood it was not just the beautiful landscapes and weather. It was where he felt good and whole as a man and human! His NM daughter and MA son spread his ashes from the top of the Sandia Mtns in a beautiful sunset. I remember warning my younger female co-workers years ago that our reproductive health was being threatened, no one was listening. But I had lived through the first womans movement 55 years ago. This election is more critical than even before and it is heartbreaking for me. I told my Veteran son all young people absolutely have to particpate!! We cannot and won't go back!!!

As a European closely following American politics from abroad, I cannot believe that these young women, who say they're not going to vote in this election, don't seem to know anything about the Biden administration's policies with regard to indigenous peoples. So I'd like to highly recommend to anyone it may concern, but especially to these young women, to please read President Biden's "Proclamation on Indigenous Peoples' Day, 2024"! If it doesn't change your mind to cast a vote for the Democratic ticket, it may least inform you on some important facts and policies of this administration that directly affect your indigenous communities in the US!

I am a Mexican American with indigenous ancestry; my grandfather had Yaqui ancestry and my grandmother Apache. My grandfather came to the US in 1920 and was never able to become a citizen due to destroyed birth records in Mexico. But he believed strongly in this country. I understand the concerns of so many of the GenZ generation who support Palestine. I support peace for both sides, the Jewish people and the Palestinian people who want nothing more than to be free. I also know this hatred towards each other goes back many generations and not one American President has been able to change it. While we can support Palestine, we must reject the actions of Hamas. This is not to say Israel is innocent in any of the crimes they have committed against the Palestinian people. Both sides are wrong. But the history of these two peoples’ conflicts goes back ages; it did not start with Biden…Harris or Trump. But my opinion is that if Trump wins this election, not only will our freedoms be in jeopardy but Trump will gladly support Netanyahu’s decision to continue killing innocent Palestinians and to take away more of their lands. It is also my belief that Netanyahu is continuing this war because he is trying to keep away from being indicted for crimes he has committed in Israel. As long as he keeps it going the Israeli people will not touch him. And, if Trump is elected , he will green light and assist in keeping Netanyahu from any legal actions; just like he will quash any actions against himself here in the U.S. I believe the stakes for our freedoms and the continued standing of the U.S. in the world depends on our votes. This is not a time to be a one issue voter. Or a voter who decides they are going to protest both candidates by wasting their vote on a 3rd party who has no chance of winning. In that case you might as well stay home. This is a time to look at our freedoms, your freedoms and your he Constitution to which we all live freely under and vote for the Candidate who believes in its ideals. And Not for the candidate who says he’s going to throw it away. A third party vote could actually be a vote in his favor. So those of you who don’t like Trump or Harris. Politician's policies have a direct impact on people's personal lives. People who say voting does not make a difference do not realize the immense difference in character and ethics between Kamala, who supports democracy, and a senile criminal who dehumanizes and plans to jail anyone who disagrees with him. Insightful piece - thank you for sharing some perspectives of an all too often underreported & dismissed segment of our society. We have far too many marginalized groups in this country, and the blatant lies, neglect and abuse the indigenous peoples of this land have suffered (and continue to suffer) is beyond shameful. I understand the frustration, disappointment and even disgust with politicians. It frequently feels like not a single one of them is trustworthy regardless of their party affiliation. Don't dwell on the Presidential candidates so much--there is so much more to vote for. The more local the candidate or issue, the more it affects you personally AND the more influence your vote has. Why was Biden so ineffective? Because a small, crazy faction of representatives tied up Congress over and over. So your representatives and your senators have more impact than who you elect president! And while the president can appoint supreme court justices, and they can decide what laws are allowed, those laws still have to be made locally. Do you think there's any lesbians in New York or California worried about staying married? Not so much, because their states are solidly behind them. Do you have to worry about that in New Mexico? Your health care, your education, your infrastructure, your family matters, your chance at starting your own business or getting a fair shake from an employer, and especially your indigenous rights, those are all in local hands! Besides the beauty and wonder of the high desert, it is the diversity and spirit of the people of New Mexico that I keep in my heart. As an 18 yo student at UNM in 1972, I cast my ballot in the first presidential election open to 18 year olds, voting for McGovern over Nixon. I have researched deeply and the corruption is *not* equally bad on both sides. The Republican party is alot worse, especially now that they've been taken over by MAGA.
