Native warm season grass field

The first field of native warm-season grass we established in 2012 Big bluestem, Indian grass, and Switchgrass. We inter-seeded it in 2018 with Purple coneflower, Tick trefoil, Cup plant, Partridge pea, Wild Bergamot, and New England aster.

Being here in North Missouri there's a lot of CRP around me that's been in for 30 years plus and there's a whole lot of Bluestem and Indian grass and switchgrass around and I had some of it coming on my farm just because the seed blew in here or Wildlife brought it and it came up so I have started Gathering buckets and bags full of Seed from my neighbors existing stands and scattering it on purpose across my farm and I to believe that it's the best thing for my cows and my land

It is good for your farm those seeds are adapted to your soils and don't require any amendments to be very productive

@@RussWilson years ago when everybody was first planting CRP they had to have a special drill to do it but you don't have to have that the best way we found was we threw it in the fertilizer cart broadcasted and then roll it down with duals and a good Harrow

Yes you can rest till the end of July. Feed quality will go down if you want till mid to late august the quality will increase. Thank for Watching!!

native grass field can be cut once in May to June timeframe for hay, but shouldn't be cut below 8"

Another awesome video! I live in the oak savanna region of the Midwest so this could be what I might do too. We live right across from a prairie so we might get seeds from birds flying over our property since we have a few native plants coming up where I have been rotational grazing this year. This area has been row cropping so it’s coming slowly even in a drought. How did you seed your native pastures?

That is awesome! If you are close to that prairie I'll the seeds are already in your soil just waiting for the opportunity to grow. I use a truax no-till grass drill to seed the natives. if I can I'll also broad cast the seed in front of the grazing livestock.

Afternoon Russ, My wife and I just purchased 40 acres, half of which is a former row cropped field. We are looking to establish a native grass stand for the purpose of foraging livestock. Was there any prep work that you specifically would recommend prior to sowing seed? We are in Eastern, NC. Thanks for your time.

When establishing natives dot your i's and cross your tee's. Follow the recommendations from the seed provider. I always try to start with a clean slate. I'll start the fall before and plant cover crops. This helps breaks the cycle and helps with getting a good stand the following spring when planting the seed. Thanks for watching!!

Hi Matt Looks like I will be at the PASA confrece 2021. Lots of folks are wanting more information on grazing native plants. We have sourced our seed from three main places Ernst Conservation Seeds, Hilltop Seed Co, and Stock Seed Farms. After getting the stands established we fence small sections off and harvest our own seed for replanting. Thanks for watching Russ

Our rest periods on the warm season fields are usually about 60 days.
