Things are getting crazier. I think all the three mergers are linked somehow. Cot/caught - ai/au merger - schwa /upside down V merger.

These are not separated mergers. They are actually one merger. They are all caused by the schwa / upside down V merger.

I don't know if this helps or not. I know that you don't have the unmerged upside down V. The simplest way I can explain it to you is that the upside down V is basically [ɔ] but less rounded.
