Nato straps are a cool and inexpensive way to try out a new vibe for your favorite watch, but when they arrive they just aren't quite right. They have this extra strap piece that adds to the height of your watch on the wrist, and makes the strap a little less comfortable too. The quality that allows it to stay on your wrist if a spring bar breaks is the fact that it's a single piece strap. Only two piece straps will fully fail if one spring bar fails. The other strap (bottom) is so you can hang the watch without fear that it will come off the strap and fall to the floor. It adds a little bit of utility... if you never intend to hang the watch you can take that bottom one off. I kinda like the extra metal loops that the bottom strap provides to the other side of the watch, it makes it feel more symmetrical and looks a little bit more hardcore, but that's just me.

But the watches that the NATO and the ZULU were designed for; the British Army G10, had fixed bars not sprung bars. The bars are literally irremovable and a part of the case.

Absolutely right. I’ve been doing this for years, too. There is a fun use for the spare tab. If you trim the corners off the end (so it’s not so blunt), take a lighter to it to stop it fraying, then melt a small hole through it using a nail, then you can thread a key ring onto it, to make a fun key fob.

I find that you don't have to cut it off. Place the strap in as usual, but when you put on the watch, put your hand in between the hole that's created and double back the extra band that's left. In other words, put your hand in between the two layers that would usually lie between the watch and wrist.

​@@apax2901 1 reason for cutting that extra keeper is less fabric. That keeper adds another layer that sits between yoyr wrist and your watch, adding height to the watch, and makes it even harder for the watch to sit flush and move about more. The other added benefit of removing that keeper is more buckle spacing to be able to keep the watch more secure.

Thank you, i just got my nato yesterday. i love the way it looks but the thickness it adds on my already thick seiko 5 and nautica makes the case sit too tall on my small wrist. i feel bad about cutting it. glad i found your comment lol! another note is this method may increase the thickness on the outer side instead, doesnt feel or look anything bad to me. just a sidenote.

If you move watch towards the middle of the strap, the "excess" will move to the bottom middle of your wrist like a regular watch band.

It has been a good many days since I first watched this video, and my mental struggling was great, cut or not cut? That is the question...and I finally did it! Just few minutes ago! and the result? Another great benefit to the NATO is that even if one pin breaks or fails, the watch is still retained. I love NATO straps. Cheap, strong, secure, simple and easy. 99% of the time my watches are hanging from a NATO.

That is the whole reason why I use nato straps. I even take the strap off of my $2000 Hamilton watch and put it away to use it. It has actually saved my watch several times where if it had been the normal strap that came with the watch, it would be gone...

Let's not forget comfort; NATOs are some of the most comfortable straps out there. I live in Phoenix, AZ; when the temps go up here, NATOs are about the only thing that can be comfortably worn in the heat.

Genius! I've been wearing my 5512 sub on a "Bond" nato on and off for years and this mod never occurred to me! I've even tried the natos that are actually 2 pieces that mount to springbars like a traditional strap but something was lost in that iteration and it just didn't suit. I did this mod on my strap and love it! That extra millimeter of watch closer to wrist makes a huge difference of the look and feel. And the good news is, if you hate it you're only out $20, tops. You could fold the keeper even with the buckle & pass the end through both if you are hesitant to cut a brand new NATO but want to try the look/feel of a single pass. Personally, I cut. The result is a superior wear.

On thinner NATOs I own, the watch will move around and slide off - if you're not wearing it that is. It happened to me while I was standing in the bathroom (of course it had to be a room with a hard floor)... the watch slipped off the strap and dropped about a meter onto the floor-tiles. Ouch! I own another NATO for that same watch and that one is made from seat-belt fabric and is much thicker. I'd never worry about slippage with that one. However: There's no real need to go around cutting those straps off. What I do with the thicker one is I simply wear it differently. You don't secure the 2nd strap as you're meant to, but instead you let it flop about and with the watch on your wrist, insert the loose end of the strap into the hoop at the end of the 2nd strap and *then* insert the loose end into the buckle and fasten the strap. It's kinda hard to describe, but it's super easy when you do it. It removes the 2nd strap from under the watch and basically turns the NATO into a Zulu without having to cut off anything. Seeing how you seem to be a fellow lefty: You might want to try putting the NATO on upside-down, so that the buckle is on the 6oc side of the watch, not the 12. I find it easier to wear it that way, it moves the buckle to the center of my wrist's underside and it puts all the "excess strap" on the inside of your wrist. That, IMO, makes it less noticeable and somewhat more comfortable on your arm.

You just blew my mind! For those who don't follow, I think you just route that 'extra' part that he cut off here underneath your wrist rather than underneath the watch back. Then when you put the watch on, put the non-buckle end of the strap (the side with the holes) through the ring on the end (the one cut off in the video) and then through the buckle as usual.

I just got my "Bond" NATO strap yesterday and while it was sooooo comfortable to wear, it was just too bulky for my liking. And this is wearing it on a G Shock GM2100C. I tried other ways, they were all nice, but I ended up cutting, and it's GLORIOUS! All of the comfort and none of the bulk! Since seeing this video, I have done this to all of the nylon slip-through straps I have gotten and it is sooooo much better. Had to come back to say thanks! It seems so intuitive now, but I would have just continued fussing with that extra flap had I not gotten this push.

Always interesting to see different ways to style a watch. Personally, I'm a 100% steel band gal... I've always worn mens watches, both dress & outdoor, and steel bands are the only ones I can wear literally everywhere. They don't absorb sweat or water, really easy to clean, the clasp is flush with the band so it doesn't catch on things... I've literally gotten my arms covered in brake dust & crud changing out a tyre on my way to work, rinsed off my watch when I got to the office & walked into a business meeting where I was randomly complimented on my watch by a colleague! LOL

:-) The reasons you mentioned are why i use almost entirely silicone or rubber bands on my watches for almost 10 years now. (those with folding clasps like metal bands). They are more comfortable with my armhair and weigh less than the metal ones, and are easy to clean as there are no gaps between links. (And the plain black ones i use often look like very smooth leather from a few meters away.) Both steel and rubber have another advantage over nylon in my view: how they feel when they get wet.

I generally wear nato straps, some are now available as single pass straps (meaning you would not have to cut off that extra bit). Generally, I hate tucking the long end over so I also trim that extra off (the bit that goes way past the keeper) and sear the end with a lighter. also a fan of Barton nato straps, they use a cloth/nylon keeper.

2 things: 1. The watch can move on the strap when you take it SCUBA diving. So that small strap really does serve a purpose. 2. If you don't like the keepers on the side of your wrist, lace the strap so that you create a loop with the two straps. This will move the keepers so that they are on the bottom of your wrist and the watch will not sit as high on your wrist. With out the hardware on both sides the strap looks unbalanced and wrong imo, and you’re using the keeper wrong that’s why it looks so bulky, don’t go over the top keeper go under it. If the double pass bothers you that much just buy single pass nato straps ?!?

Absolutely brilliant! Immediately preformed the S on a nato following watching your video. I have always loved the look and hated the feel of NATO's. They always sit too high, affect the feel of the watch and on heavier divers you have to cinch em down so much they strangle your wrist. Now my watch sits closer and is SO much more comfortable. After a dive, I noticed a broken spring bar. My watch was just fine and still on my arm. A Nato strap is the only strap I've ever worn since. Also, Nato straps are much more gentle on a dry suit wrist seal.

Gotta admit that I don't even know why I watch this channel. As an aircraft mechanic for the last 18 years, I don't wear wrist watches. Occassionally a fitness tracker (aka smart watch), but not even that very often. There's just something so satisfying (and I've grown to hate hearing that over used term) about watching a watch come apart get cleaned, repaired, and restored. Since I just started a new job working a desk, maybe if I watch enough of these videos it'll tempt me to get a nice vintage (or reproduction) watch. Being in the military avaition industry maybe one of those A-11 designs. Nice simple design, that IMO looks good dressed up or casual. It's great to put a face with the voice, but there's one little part of this video that triggered me a bit. It was the part after you cut the first strap and were using a lighter to melt the cut end. It appeared that you were having difficulty finding the right word to use for the process. As a boy scout I wanted to tell you that is referred to as fusing. You were fusing the end of the strap together. It's the same thing that you do to a nylon cord or rope to keep it from coming unfrayed after cutting.

I like the extra height from the double pass as it raises the crown away from the wrist and you can get away with wearing a larger watch without the crown pushing into the back of the and when doing certain tasks. I feel the extra bulk also gives a more premium aesthetic too

That extra piece your cutting off is what is locking your watch case in place, that is a secrety feature nato straps are very popular for by the way. I have the other problem though, the excessive length flap I have to tuck in at the end of the strap, it makes it look ugly.

Just cut that side to length leave about an inch or inch and a half longer than you need so it will still tuck under the first bar. After you cut it round it off if you prefer then hit it with a lighter and you're done

There's ways to wear it where all the excess bulk is at the bottom of your wrist, I like it for a little extra comfort and "padding" on my wrist. But I myself have cut up so many NATOs lol. It also helps to burn the hell out of it then finely sand the edge if you're interested in that.

That's not why the second strap is for. People assume that and it becomes a myth. Back in the day, straps weren't easily matched by size to the watches. Often times, an 18mm strap was the only option for a 20mm lug width watch. The second strap would prevent the watch from flying off the strap when handling.

Why not just purchase a Zulu strap? That extra strap stops your watch from sliding down the strap when you’re taking it off. There’s other ways to wear a NATO strap so it’s not bulky up top.

It definitely looks sleeker on the wrist and feels a bit more comfortable with the watch case closer to skin. But as others have noted, you lose the security of the original NATO strap design when the watch is off the wrist. Without the extra loop, the watch can slip off the strap if you're not careful. With that said, the cheapo NATO that came with my cheapo Timex Weekender chrono already has several kinks by the spring bars, so it doesn't readily slip even without the extra strap.

The one strap was actually a Chevron strap from Crown & Buckle which is a good option if you don't like the extra layer of material or if you get the dig in your wrist from the loop side.

I find that burning that flap creates a crusty area that rubs the wrist especially in the summer. You can buy straps without that little extra bit that are a better strap. I have even found leather NATO straps.

There is a type of nylon watch strap called "RAF" strap, that does not have the extra flap, but has the rectangular buckle, and sometimes it has just a nylon loop instead of the additional rings. I tend to remove the flap and keep only one of the extra loops that's closest to the buckle, then put the watch on the strap upside down, so I can have the buckle on the inner edge of my wrist, right next to the watch, so the buckle doesn't touch the laptop or desk or whatever happens to be under my wrist. I've found that to be the ultimate watch strap wisdom, so now I must spread the truth.

I just picked up a Nato strap for my Seiko dive watch and found the case to ride high on the top of the wrist which got me thinking how to modify it so I didn't have a double layer of nylon under it. Sooo...., I KZbin and this was the first video I came across and BOOM, the answer to my dilemma. Took all of 2 minutes to alter and now it feels great on the wrist. 😀

The piece you cut off can be made into a keeper. I do this on Leather ZULU straps. I also remove all hardware except the buckle. Then I make two leather keepers from the removed section and so I can use the strap as a single pass with the buckle and keepers under the wrist like a normal strap. To make the two keepers you need to cut the leather lengthways, measure it, skive it, glue it, and add a stitch or two.

Way back in time (late 1960`s early 1970s) they sold nylon watch straps in all the colours of the rainbow some still appear on eBay from time to time. you may find if your Nato straps have 2 rows of stitching one behind the buckle, cutting there and removing the flap by undoing the second row of stitching, cutting loose the steel loops for strap control, the strap will have less bulk and fit more snuggly. Good Video, I do this on occasion. However, I like the single pass RAF strap the best. They have one broad keep and light, simple and comfortable. I wish they came in more solid colors and cameo, but have not found them.

Just did this mod to my strap on my Seiko 5 - fits much better, less pressure on my wrist as well, so my chosen tightness is more comfortable

Love the vid, thought I was the only one who immediately cut the keeper. I'd I e is hesitant to cut a brand new strap, you could also fold the keeper even with the buckle and pass the end through both the keeper hardware and the buckle simultaneously. It's a less permanent way to try before you cut. Like the vid, I 💯 recommend the cut. Wears much better.

I agree with you only if the size is the exact otherwise it helps keep the watch from slipping I have both kinds and prefer the single nato

Instead of cutting it off try putting the watch further down the strap then that short strap goes under your wrist and that way you have that material between your skin and the buckle. It is really comfortable and keeps it integrity.

I do the same thing only I go a bit further in that I also cut off the 2nd keeper and cut off the excess length of the strap so I don't have the goofy 'bow tie' on the side ....

interesting solution. One thing to think about is that, as I understand from other videos, the additional strap is a design feature that ensures that if you are in the field and knock the watch and lose the lug, the watch will not fall off your wrist. If you notice, the watch remains on wrist with just one lug from either side. So something to consider in terms of what you use the watch for. Desk diving would not be an issue, but if you go hiking or do other outdoor activities, it may make sense to use it as designed.

Any single piece strap allows it to stay on your wrist, I have provided an explanation of the bottom strap in the comments elsewhere.

This modification does not affect the retention property of the nato strap. It's still a full loop that goes through both lugs even if you cut off the vestigal nonsense.

It will not fall off a full loop. It's a design feature to prevent the watch from moving - presumably when wearing the watch over clothing.

You should definitely look at Form-Function-Form. They make some pretty rad watch straps. “NATO” style with respect to the fact they are one piece and slide in and out just the way you demonstrated. The cool part is how they secure. There is a small adjustable stud closer to watch case so you don’t scrape your strap buckle all over.

Nice video, but what if one of your spring bars falls off or breaks off, then you will just lose your watch. The main reason for using Nato is that it helps to; 1. Secure your watch even if one of the spring bars falls off. 2. Wear your watch even in winter, with Nato straps you can wear your watch even in freezing winters, here in Canada during winters everything freezes including your watch's metal back case. Due to my work sometimes I have to remove my watch and put it on a table, and even after just 10 minutes, it becomes super cold. However, due to the dual layer of the Nato strap, the coldness of the metal case doesn't bother much. And this my thinking others might be different. I have noticed that in the market without loop NATO straps are also available.

I treat my NATO straps in a similar fashion, except that I remove all of those buckles, and make a new strap retainer out of the left over strap, which is then attached using contact adhesive. I have a few military watches that are using this set up. Works fine for me.

Because it's nylon there's alot of interesting things you can do with nato straps. For example, you can put a smart watch on a nato strap, you just have to, first do what's explained in this video. cut out a hole for the sensors and use a knife or something to make a clean eye when you first the edges of the hole. I do not personally wear a smart watch anymore, but that is how I wore mine. I tested one for 3 months or so, but it was too many smart screens on my life.

I was wearing a Speedmaster on a NATO in Italy last month without cutting the bottom strap, and it wore a little high. The bottom strap is there to prevent the watch from moving around, but mine keeps perfectly in place nonetheless. Thanks for reminding me of burning to avoid shredding.

Marshall I love your repair videos and it’s great to see your face here! But…I have to respectfully disagree with your take on the humble NATO strap. As others have pointed out, not only does it keep you connected to your timepiece if a spring bar fails, but it puts a nice smooth piece of material between your skin and the watch back, protects it from drawer and counter scratches, and elevates the watch on your wrist which I find especially nice for smaller watches and in particular chronographs. Having owned dozens, I’ll add that you kind of get what you pay for so avoid the temptation to get the cheap sets and sub-$15 singles and spend at least $20 from a recognized brand. The cheap ones fray at the holes, are blandly colored, and the hardware is thin and usually poorly finished. And by all means if you want a one-piece fabric strap that just snakes under the spring bars there are plenty to pick from and you’re not wasting money or material. Cheers though!

Ok - I'm a subscriber but I've never seen this video. A) so that's what you look like and B) you are a M:tG fan. Great hack on the NATO strap. I have a Marathon field watch that looks horrible sitting so high on my wrist. This should change that. Thanks for what you do!

This would lead to a very big hump to the front, but perhaps instead of cutting off the extra flap, it can be routed only through the first watch springbar. To then loop back and be connected behind the buckle, by temporarily removing it's springbar, sliding on the metal loop and attaching it again. I have yet to try this and test whether it's comfortable, the two watches I have a NATO on benefit from the extra strap height of the standard configuration. My calculator watch needs it to avoid a corner of it's case digging into my skin and on my modified GBX-100 I use the height to wear it over jacket sleeves, which is it's purpose for me.
