You can see why it didn't have any meaningful springs, because with vertical cylinders it would have waddled like a duck. Even Rocket must have shown that tendency, which is presumably why it was rebuilt with the cylinders nearer to the horizontal.

It had springs fitted when used in the Rainhill trials, recent research has shown that Locomotion also had springs through most of its working life

You know what I would love to see, someone try building a steam engine with todays knowledge and technology advances, but following the Rainhill trials entry rules and seeing if they can out perform the Rocket.
@the_retag Жыл бұрын
easily. much much higher boiler pressures and more efficient boilers, supeheaters, high precision machining etc. would have already been a childs play in the 1930s, and google "modern steam" if youwant to see how much further weve come
@exveefan Жыл бұрын
@@the_retag I know that, but the Rainhill trials had strict Stipulations and Conditions, One of them was "boiler no greater than 50 pounds per square inch" So your Higher boiler pressure suggestion is out. My question DID say "today's knowledge" which does mean features like supeheaters, high precision machining etc. With that in mind you also have to obey the other entry condition "No locomotive may weigh more than six tons" So let me rephrase my question to you. - CAN we Build a Locomotive following RainHill trial Entry Conditions with todays Modern advances including supeheaters, high precision machining etc. But still with the strict restictions including that the locomotive weigh no more than 6 tons and have a boiler pressure no higher than 50 Psi. And be able to out perform the Rocket?
@the_retag Жыл бұрын
@@exveefan weight is not an issue. we can build tiny steam locos

It would be easy to outperform the originals, just the design of more modern valve gear alone would make a far more effective engine even if you didn't improve anything else

What my friend and I find sort of ironic (and Sans Pareil is my friends favorite Rainhill loco) is that Rocket barely lasted more than a few years in service, whereas Sans Pareil was a real workhorse of its time and just kept on going. Truly one of a kind and without any equal

A later trial of Stephenson designs against Hackworth repaired design would surely have the advantages of the multi tubular boiler and better blast pipe prevail. The U-tube boiler with the fireman at the other end never got into large scale production for good reasons.

So much of the history has been ignored or changed. Robert Stephenson & Co were accused of deliberate sabotage by providing Hackworth with a defective cylinder. Although it almost certainly not deliberate, I find it curious that you choose to completely ignore such an important, well documented part of its history.
@adeerdoes Жыл бұрын
Because it IS an important, well documented part of history. Something this chanel likes to do is talk about the lesser known historical facts about the engines in the collection. For instance, I had no clue this engine ended up as a winding house, but the suspected sabotage of components (unlikely) has been told to death!
