how we make the bricks
Video about the Natural Clay Brick making process in Sri Lanka where only clay, soil mud, water and rice shells are used.
made some fired clay bricks as an experiment to see if I could make a permanent, waterproof, building material. A brick mold was fashioned from clay and then fired in existing kiln. This was then used to make bricks formed from clay from the creek bank. These bricks were then stored in the hut I built last episode to dry. Using half the hut I could fit 500 bricks. These, when semi dry, were then stacked around the fire to dry out. A small kiln was then assembled from un-fired bricks and used to fire bricks as an experiment. It was about 5 m tall and 3m square in cross section. The fired clay bricks were water resistant, they didn't dissolve when submerged in water.
I will use these bricks to make a larger kiln and hopefully larger huts later on. I estimate that a kiln with cube ware chamber could hold 500 bricks without being so cramped the flames can't get through. The good thing about using bricks to make kilns is that they can be constructed quickly without waiting for the layers to dry, they only crack along the joints between bricks while remaining structurally stable, they can be disassembled and built elsewhere or they can be reconfigured/enlarged to make different types of kilns. Repairs are also possible too.
In this video, we are going to show you how clay bricks are made manually (handmade bricks). The brick manufacturing process is a very hard process because everything is done by hand. Nowadays there are many brick machines available but in the village, they always used traditional clay bricks making process.
This is how they make clay bricks.
We will show the step by step process of making your own mud bricks. 🏡
Mud, as opposed to the popular view, is not a good insulator. We live in a mud house with 18" thick walls, which provides a high thermal mass and helps with temperature extremes we get during the day (cold nights, hot days) where we are. The bricks we make are 12" (instead of a 9" red brick). Mud is a very forgiving medium to construct with, and when you make any changes to the structure ... you don't create any debris or rubble ... you can just reuse the mud!
This is how we make the bricks.
work to do in the fields, workers of all ages come from rural parts of Sri Lanka, to earn a little money in the brickyards.
They often stay for months, living in houses built in the yard, often with their families. The work is backbreaking and exhausting, to say the least.
One can find clusters of men dealing with different stages of the process.
One group is busy extracting mud from which the bricks are made, mixing it with water to keep it workable.
The mud is then transported by wheelbarrows to another group of people, the brick makers.
This is where the mud is put in wooden molds to give the bricks the desired shape. The brick makers work extremely fast as they are paid per brick made.

you watched the production process of the lowest quality bricks, especially in a country like Sri Lanka, which is in an earthquake zone, these bricks should be called "death bricks".
