This is Agnes from Uganda. I started following coily dairies last year around April. I had gotten stuck in 6-7inches for 8 years but when incorporated ure ideas now am 10 inches longer, thicker and healthy. I learned that my hair doesn't like heat and oils but grease is abig good deal for us. So am a grease girl😅😅

I guess now would be a good time to share my story. I cut my hair in 2020. Since then, I haven't cut it, added extensions, used heat, etc. It's been all natural. However, I didn't really know how to care for it, so I've been stuck at around 6-7 inches forever. I've always done my hair in twists and cornrowed styles, nothing else. Last year, in August, I tarted watching hair care KZbin. I found Coily after a couple of weeks and loved watching her, so I stayed. I started really caring for my hair in September, 2024. It grew about an inch and half between the end of September and the end of December. I trimmed twice in that period, about half an inch each time. Currently, my hair is at 8 inches. I started doing my hair myself since then. It's not been perfect, or even good. People (including family) have said some odd and discouraging things. But I'm still on my journey. I started with twists, but now I'm doing braids. I have fine strands, and medium to low density hair. I have finger detangled almost exclusively since September. I used combs on my hair only two or three times. I absolutely love my hair. In fact, a challenge I have is keeping my hands out of it. Even with my midi to mini braids (I have about 60 installed) I can't help taking it down often and doing it back up. I hope to be able to leave it in for a month this time, and wash every two weeks. It's a bit discouraging when family often talks down on me. But I console myself that the end result will speak.

I want to try to follow your aggressive length retention challenge this year, with slight modifications. I exclusively wear my hair to work, so I'll have to take it down once every three weeks to a month, at least. I'll take each braid down, detangle and rebraid, one at a time. Hopefully, as i get better, I'll be able to leave the braids in for longer. I also plan to wash every two weeks for now. I dont think I want to go any longer. I'll be remoisturizing twice a week (with my glycerin and rosewater spritz, then leave in, then oil, then cream and butter. I know it's a lot, but the weather is currently very dry, and my hair also gets dry fast). Thanks for putting me on to glycerin, Coily.💞 I plan to remoisturize braid by braid, but we'll see.😂 I've also been thinking about deep conditioning weekly. I don't have a heat cap, and I can't afford one right now, so this seems to be my only option. Please, Coily, let me know what you think about this part of the plan. I also wear a bonnet or satin scarf whenever I'm not going to work. I think that helps. I started keeping a hair journal at the beginning of this year. All in all, I want to retain at least 4-6 inches this year. This should take me to around bra strap length. Thanks for being my inspiration. I watch all your length retention videos at least once a week.😂 I know you're going to recover from your setback, and your hair is going to surpass your expectations once more. Congratulations once more🎉

You're doing amazing and that's what matters, your hair journey is yours! 🎉. thanks for sharing your story. it’s so relatable. it’s so motivating when you start to see progress with your hair… stay on track, you will see great results by year end. what sorts of things do you get told by your family?

love your strategy actually! are you planning to deep condition without cleansing? this is similar to what I do when moisturising weekly. only difference is I use products that I won’t need to rinse out. I wouldn’t generally think there is a need for that frequent deep conditioning but you know your hair best. would you be able to “deep conditioning” with a leave in instead? might help with style longevity and less hassle needing to rinse out a etc?

My family would often say that I'm always doing my hair too much, and I'm wasting time. My mom (I'm just out of college, so still living with my parents) specifically always criticizes my look and styles. I had an event in December and she said I shouldn't use those weird smelling products like the coconut oil on my hair. And she also criticized the way the hair looked. I know it wasn't the best, because I'm still learning. But it can be discouraging at times.

@@CoilyDiariesYes, the plan was to deep condition without cleansing. But maybe I could try doing it with leave in so I don't have to wash it out. I'm still trying out different things, because I don't know my hair well enough yet. I'll let you know how it works out.Thank you so much for all the information and advice.

If there's one you tuber that's taught me to stick to what works for your hair, it's you. I was quite consistent with the challenge, have mini braids that I re-braid every 6 weeks, been like this 7 months now, starting to un-do them today, will wash next weekend. Will probably keep my hair out for a week and braid again. This is the longest I've ever gone without extensions or mini twists and I'm happy with the growth I see. Ready for the next challenge. Because of you, castor oil has been my staple for almost a year now, I have no reason to switch to any other oil for sealing

Thank you for sharing your hair care journey, Coily Diaries, along with the different styles and styling methods that you tried, along with lessons learnt. I followed your hair moisturising routine in 2024 and learnt the importance of lavishing products on my hair to keep it moisturised. Earlier in the year, I tried your 2 month challenge, but was able to go for one month which allowed me to keep hair growth. I tried to not wash my hair for the month by brushing my scalp as you did, but that didn’t work for me as I realised that my scalp cried out to be washed weekly. Because of frequent washing, I was unable to live with the frizz which led to over manipulation of my hair and more breakage. In November I tried Henna to cover my greying hairline and I was pleased with the outcome. In December I tried faux locs as a protective style. I kept them in for five weeks, moisturised my hair while in extensions. I also extended my washday to 2 weeks. At the end of the five weeks I saw significant growth. So, my plan for 2025 is to use faux locs for at least 5 weeks at a time, extend my wash days, moisturise my hair while in extensions, and give my hair 2 weeks break between installations so as to moisturise and enjoy my hair!

Thanks for sharing Just discovered plant-based extensions. Found a black-owned company called rebundle that sells them but they're not affordable 😢 Looking to save up to get them so I can braid and keep them in for 3-6 months at a time for length retention My hair thrives on braids and long term protective styles Saw a KZbinr named Zinhle Africa on a 6-month braid challenge which I'd want to try Love your videos ❤ Keep them coming

Thanks for sharing Sis! I learned a lot about my hair, and I’m still learning. 😅 I had a setback with using my beloved Shea butter and experienced a lot of shedding. I returned to hair grease as a result. I also converted from braids to twists. Although braids allow for faster length retention, if not careful, they can cause too much tension to the scalp. So like you, I live in twists. I strictly finger detangle, I don’t use heat and my hair is loving life. I finally found a leave in conditioner that’s worth my time. My routine is as simple as it gets. I’m currently experimenting with using less product so that I can return to using African black soap to shampoo. We’ll see how it goes. 💕

As I'm watching I'm thinking life carries us around so much, I didn't stick to my routine the way I wanted either 😅. But a friend just gave me some Shea butter, first time having some in years, and I'm excited to use it when I remoisturize my medium twists & I still use the vegetable glycerine with distilled water. I'm not so much on a length challenge but a density challenge because I'm in menopause.
