Burpee Museum of Natural History presents "The Homer Site: The First Triceratops Bonebed from Carter County, Montana" by Josh Mathews, Director of Paleontology.
Lecture Description:
The Homer Site was discovered by a Burpee Museum paleontology field crew in the Hell Creek Formation of southeastern Montana. This site preserved the fossil remains of three young Triceratops. Triceratops was first described in the late 1800's and is the most common dinosaur found in the Hell Creek Formation. Until the Homer Site was discovered, all other Triceratops were found as individuals. This led some to believe that Triceratops may not have been herd animals like many of its relatives that can be seen in the Homer Exhibit here at Burpee. Josh Mathews excavated this site over 5 summers. Learn about what this discovery tells us about the life of Triceratops in the latest Cretaceous of North America!
This lecture was given on September 28th, 2022. Burpee Museum is a nonprofit natural history museum located in Rockford, IL.
