A lecture by Russell Hittinger (University of Tulsa). Presented at the University of Chicago on November 21, 2013
For the first thirty years of his priestly and academic career Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI)
registered virtually no interest in the theory or practice of natural law. His slumbers with regard to moral theology changed dramatically after he became the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation
of the Doctrine of the Faith in 1981. In this lecture we will consider his significant and somewhat
paradoxical contributions to Catholic natural law theory.
