What an incredible build! The color of the water between the deep part in the center and the shallow gravel filled is pretty spectacular. I like the sleeper timbers outlining the deeper parts too. The scale is so large that it is a lot to take in. You almost need a drone camera to do an above shot. I have a 4500 gallon koi pond, but nothing like this. This is very impressive. Thank you for taking the time to upload this video.

i love the finished product. beautiful. as i contractor i am curious how the wood in the water will hold up over time. did you do a comparison to how mortar vs wood in last in water over a long period of time or was it a design choice? don't get me wrong it looks beautiful, i am just curious as to the choice of building materials...ty for your answer in advance.

Hello Dane. I know it seems odd. However, wood totally submerged in an oxygen-free environment can last centuries. Parts of Venice are built on wood piles. Shipwrecks that are centuries old are still being discovered. Logs are highly sought after and have been submerged for decades. (Swamp Loggers) Most people think of rotting piers when they think of wood in water. The decaying part is at the water level, where the oxygen and water mix. Mostly, we used mixed hardwood and some pine. My great-grandkids may have to deal with the wood when they are old. Hello Pam, Wood that is submerged will last decades or more. This is why shipwrecks centuries old are found intact. Now that I think about it, there is a wetlands garden park in Hakone Japan (I live in Japan) where there is an exhibit of a “1000” year old tree they found buried in the water part of the park. The huge monster tree trunk is still in the water as they found it and looks to be in very good condition… not rotten or decayed at all: The park is called The Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands (箱根湿生花園). It has thousands of wetlands plants…

Hey Matt- I used Conservation Technology as my filtration designers. If you by the components they will design the filtration system for free. We did the install as they send terrific step by step details of the installation process. The intake is 4" perforated pipe that lays under 3-4' of gravel. So we are pulling the water through the root zones of the plants to aid in nutrient uptake. A 5 hp VSD pump that runs higher in warmer weather and has 3 daily speed settings available. A 30000 biosphere filter and can turn the 90000 gal 3 times a day if necessary. My biggest mistake was not using a skimmer. I am installing one hopefully tomorrow. Thanks for the comments. Except for the liner. (My son-in-law works for the liner company). Every part of this project was done by family and friends. Would I have tried this without knowing the people around me and their talents? No. Am I fortunate to have these people in my life? Absolutely I thank God every day. Hi Scott. Wood does not rot under water. That is why we still find centuries-old shipwrecks intact. Wood rots when oxygen is present. I don't know anything about natural pools but for some reason, I thought they were more free form, like a pond (from the photos I've seen) and pretty maintenance free, without filters or lights. I guess it's whatever you want or afford.

Thank you. When I designed the layout, I wanted to work around the existing trees while maintaining the correct amount of biozone for filtration. So the landscape dictated the end result. Yes, we are building a guest/pool house. The pool was completed about 2 months before the pool house. I am putting together another video with the structure.

really really cool project, quite fancier than i expected actually. inspiring. me personally not sure i will ever be willing to spend enough to make it happen the way you did, what was it 200k? i guess adding the house really skews things. i am very interested in testing compacted clay earth as a truly natural pond, or perhaps do the calcs to see how much it evaporates so i need rain collectors to top it off idk. love the natural pond, but i also love clean looking non slimy pools a ton so i am a bit worried about a dirt/gravel bottom. i suppose the liner would be pretty slimy? but theres not really anywhere to touch it on yours since its all covered right

We have had an average rain year, and I have only added water once. It truly overflows more often. We have gravel on the bottom, and the liner is not exposed. I actually use a Dolphin Premiere pool robot to clean the bottom. It works surprisingly well. I like a nice, clean, chlorine pool, but this is much more. It has winter appeal. Kids love it, especially little ones. Some of the fish come right up to you. The plants and waterlilies are just another dimension of the appeal. It's beautiful at night as well. Anyway, we had yet to have a second thought. If you have any questions, I will always respond.

Hi Stevie. We run a 5 hp VSD pump and once the sun is out and we hit 50 degrees we start the pump running to keep the algae at bay. We have a 30000 gal biofilter and turn the water 3-6 times daily. When the fountains are running, and the filters are at full blast, we can use an extra $115 a month, and in the winter, when we run at the lowest 600 rpm for about 8 hours, we are a couple dollars a month. Hi Grace, the good thing about this type of build is that we thought ahead regarding these types of concerns. Mosquitos like stagnant water. The fountains run for hours daily, and the filter pumps keep the water moving. Then, there is the second line of defense. Fish, we keep about 40 goldfish and 7 bluegills. Lots of time and effort and it paid off. Somehow the wood retaining wall to me just doesn't fit in and I wouldn't want anything that would deteriorate and have to be replaced over time . To me it has the effect of an area being flooded more than a natural pond, of course that is just my opinion and don't take it as being critical of your hard work. I would have done the retaining walls or division areas submersed with large rocks and boulders instead of precise placed wood. Being an artist and naturalist all rock would be my choice of course, but you achieved a great result and it looks very nice.

Thanks for the thoughts. Wood does not deteriorate when fully submerged as our timbers are. This is why shipwrecks centuries-old remain intact. Where wood and water don't work is when oxygen is introduced. This is why it is at water level when you see failing piers and bulkheads. I have been in the lumber industry since the 80s. We actually cut the timbers we used here on the farm. So, a little heritage and budget came into play with our decision. Thanks for looking. Hello Stephane. All wood submersed and not exposed to oxygen is rot-proof for decades and even centuries. Parts of Venice are built on wooden piles driven into the seabed. My son-in-law brought his crew in to help. He lines large manmade ponds for a living. I also was in the landscape industry for nearly 30 years but no longer. Was I not to draw on my past experiences to aid in a personal project? With nearly one thousand of my physical labor hours into this, DIY seemed appropriate. Your assumptions do not limit my reality. As for the timbers. They are untreated mixed hardwood and pine. Submersed wood does not decay. Wood shipwrecks centuries old are still being discovered intact. Hello, Wood that is submerged does not decay. It takes oxygen to decompose. This is why century-old shipwrecks are still intact. You usually see rotting wood on bulkheads and piers at the water level, where water mixes with oxygen to cause decay.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. The interesting thing about wood is that it will not decay if kept underwater. This is why you still find shipwrecks centuries old. If you ever look at a decaying pier, it is always where the water and oxygen meet at the water line. Our walls stay constantly submerged. There is water entirely around the border walls. Outside, the swimming pool wall is filled with gravel as part of the biofilter system.

That wood will last a lifetime underwater out of contact with air,I built a small prototype pond for my koi, I took it apart 8 years later and the wood retaining walls that were cypress lumber were like new fully saturated.

We were undoubtedly concerned; however, snakes and turtles are not movement fans. When the temperature warms up, the fountains stay on, and the filter jets are directed to the surface. We had a snake last year. Even traditional pools occasionally enjoy their presence. Thanks for the nice comment. We are ready for summer again.

Neither. They were taken from the pots and directly planted in the gravel. According to our testing, the fish seem to supply enough fertilizer, and the plants are removing nitrogen. Hello Emil, We used 6"x6" mixed hardwoods of various lengths. Oak, sweetgum, poplar, and beech. The wood will not decay because it is never exposed to oxygen. It will last many decades or longer. I have attached a video of the pool a year after completion. studio.kzbin.info2Bwm_0aqwwo/edit

We used mostly mixed hardwood. Ash, gum, poplar, hickory, oak, and softwood pine. When wood is submerged, it does not decay. It can last for centuries. Like the idea and it did turn out looking good. Hope you really enjoy it. Aside: Too many unnecessary angles for my personal taste ... chops up the space, seems impractical, and it minimizes size of individual gathering spaces needed for use by family or for entertaining but then, it is narrow enough to talk across, has buildings with porch space beside it and the smaller places could serve as more private conversation spaces. The unnecessary angles, however, I suspect, could mean higher future maintenance -- hope I'm wrong about that.

There is quite a bit more to the design than your dialogue would suggest. There are trees in the landscape I needed to save. There is a house I could not move. Irrigation pipes are limiting me on another side. Then, there is the need for a calculated number of square feet for a bio-zone for plants to filter out excess nutrients to keep the water clean and clear. So, after that, I have x amount of square footage for swim pond usage. Our choice was to use timbers. As I am sure you know, submerged wood can last centuries. We also cut our own timbers, saving countless dollars while providing our own structural material. We needed to work around the large Jap maple, so we stepped around it and made a cove. It's hard to bend timbers, so there are some more angles. I don't know how the angle relates to more maintenance. I could have made a big square and gained a few more feet. The wood is untreated hardwood and pine timber. Wood does not rot if it is not exposed to oxygen. That is why shipwrecks from 100's years ago are still found. My timber walls are always under 2-4" of water.

Hmm. Natural to the point I wanted to replicate a healthy pond. No chlorine is used. Water movement has to be repeated since I have no spring. The plants will eventually keep the water clear but need help until they are established. That's why we are filtering. Fountains are a vital part of aeration, plus the movement keeps frogs and mosquitos away (naturally). So, it is more natural than a sterile pool. Both have their merits. Thanks for commenting.

It is an unusual color. I use Pondworx aqua blue lake and pond in our irrigation pond, so I decide to use some in this pond to help battle early-stage algae blooms. Boy, it hung around for a while. It would not have been wise to have a longtime friend and concrete contractor not help with the concrete for the pool house. But that was not the pool. You did see help with the liner. My son-in-law brought his crew in to help. He lines large manmade ponds for a living. I also was in the landscape industry for nearly 30 years, but no longer. Was I not to draw on my past experiences to aid in a personal project? DIY seemed appropriate, with nearly one thousand of my physical labor hours into this. Your assumptions do not limit my reality. They have not been a problem. You must be doing something wrong at your pond. The mosquitos are manageable between the BT treatment, fish, and dragonflies. Plus, we keep the water always moving; as you must know, this decreases the attractiveness to mosquitos.
