"Swimming in natural water is a delight to our sences. Your skin and hair feels soft and your eyes don't sting. It seems as if, every cell in your body is telling you - this is the way swimming should be." David Pagan Butler
A Natural Swimming Pool is swimming pool that has clear water without using chemicals. These pools rely entirely on the plants and animals to condition the water. This is so effective that this pool has been tested and shown to be of drinking water quality. Also, through the continual natural "cleaning process" the pool water never needs changing, saving water. Chemical free so it is healthy for people and wildlife. Wild Swimming at home.

Hi, this cost me around 6000 GBP in total. The main outlay was the EPDM liner 2500 GBP the rest was for building materials and digger hire. ottawadigs - thank you for your heartening response. The pool water was recently tested and shown to be of "UK Drinking water quality". Over the past 20 years many thousands of these pools have been made in Austria and Germany including many public pools. No significant health issues have arisen.

Truly beautiful; if it may be helpful to some people wondering about mosquitoes: I can’t speak for any single area of the globe, but I can tell that I never had so little mosquitoes around my home since I’ve built my pond in the garden. Such a variety of creatures started to dwell in it, developing a nice ecosystem that lead the population of mosquitoes to drop down drastically.

I feel like all the negativity on here is just from people who didn't grow up swimming in freshwater lakes with these creatures and bugs around. I was lucky enough to grow up in Canada where this is a completely normal thing. The circulation of the water by the pumps would certainly be enough to discourage mosquito growth and anything else in the water is going to be harmless to you. Nothing is going to swim down your pants. It's all more afraid of you then you are of it. Proper maintenance wouldn't be any harder than a normal pool. And of course, it would be much better for the environment.

Thank you for your kind words. Yes they could store water for irrigation. The water could not be used for household kitchen use and showers as these supplies have to meet water authority standards. Using the pond for "Grey" water to flush toilets should be OK but you may need to check. However, some natural swimming pools have been tested and shown to be above drinking water quality. Of course they are also nature reserve!

Some of the cautionary comments are valid, but as far as the mosquitoes go, they are trivially easy to prevent; the introduction of a dozen or so "mosquito fish", guppies or similar, will eliminate mosquito larvae, by foraging voraciously for them. I found this out in my own backyard pond, in a climate where mosquito infestations are a serious problem (Eastern MA). Choosing a very small species of fish is desirable, because you don't want them to threaten dragonfly nymphs; the nymphs as well as adult dragonflies help control the vicious mosquitoes, as well as being pretty and fun to watch.

Most water-loving snakes are harmless. By eliminating hiding places around the pond, you would deter rodents and snakes. They don't live IN the water, they only enter it on occasion to drink and hunt.

Jesus, I'm reading the comments and people is so picky... Haven't you ever swum in a lake or in a pond out in the wild? do you know anyone who has done that before and died due to a disease that was in the water? and what's the thing about insects and fishes living in the water? Can't you share or do you need a "humans only" pool to have fun? I understand the fear of snakes or alligators swimming into the same pond, but that can happen in ordinary pools too so it doesn't make a difference, plus you can maintain your own swimming pond the same way you maintain a pool, cleaning it every day... Enjoy natural resources before they completely disappear.

Man the comments in this thread just reek with city people that don't even know what real water is like. There is nothing wrong with swimming in this water at all and there are NATURAL ways to make sure the water stays fresh and clean so that it's free from Bacteria and other harmful substances. (BUT MAH SNAKES AND BUGS) what's a gate and a natural repellents? Educate yourself people. Best part too? I can open my eyes under water and not worry about chemical burning Chlorine..

Clay Norrbin Point is, a snake would get into a normal swimming pool enclosure/garden as well, and surprise, surprise they often hang around as they love the sun trap terraces kindly provided. If a water snake that is harmful to people (do they even exist in Europe?) tried to take up residence, it is not that much more difficult to catch and repatriate than any other snake hanging around your garden.

I admit, it's not 100% fool proof and the risk is always gonna be there, there are forms of natural cleaners you can use that do eliminate a large portion of bacterium in bodies of water. It's just a choice and these pools can happen if you follow proper safety measures.

I'm confused about comments asking about leeches. I don't live in a place where leeches are found so I have next to no understanding of them, but I'm having a hard time understanding how one could dig a hole in one's back yard, install a pool in said hole, and leeches would (even eventually) appear. How would they be introduced to the pool? Last I checked, leeches neither possess legs nor go through a transitional form that includes wings. So how would they colonize a pool in someone's yard?

Now if you have a good understanding on Biology then why are you saying a pond is safe?... you have no clue do you!. listen if you want me to give you a lecture and write a book here on why ponds are bacterial perfect breeding grounds and a high risk for infection, even when you don't have a lesion, then you bet your ass I will question your education, you got that right!. and for the cheap punch about my grammar and English, this is my 3rd language, my first is Spanish and my second German.. so I wonder, how many do you know?.... c'mon let's do this!.. I live for this.

Omar Garcia"kids swim in lakes and ponds all the fucking time." you fucking clown. once again, I will tell you to come back here when you learn to read better than a first grader. ooh a eurotrash busting out the language card? I also know 3 languages, English, French and Spanish. I live in Ottawa, Canada. and more to the point, even if it is your third language, you obviously know what the word "pond" is, because you spouted off about it. and yet, twice now, you have not realized that I said PONDS. "high risk" is relative term, and you seemingly did not learn this in school either. being put to sleep for an operation is explained by the doctors to be "high risk" because its about 10 times higher risk than just a strong sedative. but even so, the actual odds of ANY complication were still 0.01%, so 1 in 10000 chance of having any kind of problem. "high risk" now all that aside, and back to the fucking point, which was made clear in my first post that you cannot seem to bring yourself to read properly, is that this particular pond HAS A SIMPLE FILTRATION SYSTEM. get back to licking those windows.

My goodness, so many questions - such a confined space ;) It is difficult to advise from here but if you want to grow water lilies then you need at least 6 hours sunlight per day. Also, a slope is in direct conflict with minimum depth and available space requirement. You pool will be pretty cool (as in temperature) because of the shade of the building - you may not need a great depth. It sounds a cool (as in fab) concept though.

Using salt water to keep the water hygeneic is healthier for people than chemical disinfectants. Natural Pools work with natural systems to achieve the same result but also benefit local ecology. And swimming in freshwater offers a different experience to swimming in salt water.

Meh. It's actually kind of icky. I can't stand plants or that disgusting feeling of wet soil on my feet. And here in Florida there would be so many mosquitos it would be a serious health hazard to you and all your neighbors. The gators are a potential threat but I suppose you could figure out a way to keep the out. However between the mosquitos and other wild animals this would NOT BE a good place to "relax".

Yes they could store water for irrigation. The water could not be used for household kitchen use and showers water as these supplies have to meet water authority standards. Using the pond for "Grey" water to flush toilets should be OK but you may need to check. However, some natural swimming pools have been tested and shown to be above drinking water quality. Of course they are also nature reserve!

it sounds pretty good, smart to use a pump (it can't be a filter like he said since he also said a frog can pass thru) to keep the water circulating. i'd be interested to see it again in 2 years to see how much algae has built up (if any), and in any case i'd still predict loads of mosquitoes and their larvae. might also have gone for white gravel on the bottom of the swimming area to make it easier to inspect the water quality visually.

It looks cool, I'll give it that, but there's no way I'd build one where I live. We get "giant water bugs" here. They're basically 3-4 inches of ugly equipped with a pair of pincer-looking mandibles that are each 1+ inch long and inject a kind of acidic saliva (not venom, so the pain isn't merely a trick on your nerves, it is actually eating away your skin). They hunt adult frogs and young snakes and turtles in small ponds, as well as other bugs; this pool would be heaven for them. Their bite is easily one of the most painful bug bites on the planet, allegedly competing closely with tarantula hawks and bullet ants. The "New World" has a lot of nuisances that the English don't have to worry about.

@MilitarySpartan
@MilitarySpartan 10 жыл бұрын
The agitators should be enough to simulate "running" water (if not, just install more or increase their power) or installing a water fall system will pretty much take care of this (again make sure it is visibly moving the water). In addition attracting wildlife such as toads, dragonflies, and mosquito fish (contact your local vector control office for some (they're free)) will pretty much nullify the problem in conjunction with the agitator system. As with any pools, ponds, etc. good proper upkeep is your best defense. If you notice any mosquito problems, just contact a local vector or mosquito control and they'll help you out. I worked for an agency for a few years and private property mosquito problems are usually pretty easy to resolve.

This looks amazing although sad to say in real life I'd probably be reluctant to get in. I probably need to retrain myself! one other problem is I am a wimp and its not heated ... but I love the idea of ponds, we had one in the garden when I was young and it brought so much wildlife ... unfortunately we put it under the apple tree and there was no water circulation so it died in about 3 different ways at the end of the summer. There was still signs of wildlife there several years later though.

invisibleman275 Permanent bodies of water develop resident populations of predatory species (aquatic insects, fish, salamanders) that reduce or eliminate the mosquito larvae in that environment. Most mosquito species would not even lay eggs in a permanent body of water. Several species of mosquitoes can breed in permanent bodies of water, but most of these have not been implicated in West Nile virus transmission.
