As a kid we kept quails and bantams, a similar setup to yours. Quails can be such finicky birds, compared to chickens, but lovely looking compared to your average chicken - but far more rewarding as a family member. Looking forward to long-term updates on them!

Fantastic! Yes we keep our bantams separate so the quails can enjoy themselves in peace. Thanks for watching! 😁

Beautiful aviary. I hate seeing the quail in cages walking on wire.

Thank you! It is lovely to see them all nestled in amongst the grasses ☺️

Adorable quail. When I lived on the reservation, there were wild quail that were always nearby and I thought they were so cute. I've never seen someone have them in their yard. Can't wait to learn about them... I do get scared of mites or bugs I might bring into the house. I'm weird I know. Thanks for the cute & beautiful video.

No problem at all! Glad you enjoyed the video. They give us lovely little eggs which are great in a salad or as a side dish ☺️

I saw elsewhere on KZbin that someone adds wood-ash and diatomaceous earth (DE) to their sand dish. I don't know if the ash has any effect on their health or if quail just enjoy it, but DE is fine grit. It gets in the joints of insect exoskeletons and abrades it until the insect can't move and dies. We used it in South Australian grain silos as cheap pest control.

Wow. I'm planning on getting quail. I've got chickens in a nice walk in run. Seeing your beautiful set up I'll do similar and not cages using a raised bed. I'll have so much fun and hopefully so will the occupants.

lovely! we've been thinking about quail for a while now. possibly in the greenhouse as the weather here is shocking. What do you think about keeping quail in greenhouses?
@gardenonthemoors6 ай бұрын
Good luck with getting your own quails! We wouldn’t probably be able to do that in our hotter English weather but winter maybe ok for us ☺️

Do you find the quail eat the grasses? I certainly found mine would demolish a lot of the plants I put in. I still do it but also put in plastic plants for cover that they can't eat 😀 How many quail do you have in the aviary - it's a great size. What proportion of boys to girls? All the best. Mags
@gardenonthemoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes they definitely do like to nibble on the grasses, the red grass I planted has since been eaten, the others and conifer have all survived though for some cover. We have 1 male and 3 females but soon to be joined by a couple more girls for the next generation. Thanks

Are those JUMBOS?
@gardenonthemoors4 ай бұрын
Hi, I have weighed the eggs of the quails and they don’t quite fit into what is expected of jumbos but they are on the bigger side ☺️

Hi there, I have a set up similar to yours that I actually used for four bantams, but I am now turning it into an aviary for a dozen quail. What do you recommend be placed in there for sleeping? Or do they just sleep...wherever? Thanks so much!
@gardenonthemoors Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. That’s exciting to hear your going to be getting some quail! I made an open nest box that they can see out of in the corner of their aviary which previous generation did use, but the ones I have now in this video tend to use the grasses and shrubs to sleep next to, so maybe a mix? Thanks 😊
@saints-gs8jc Жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to reply! I have seen a whole variety of methods while watching and researching various videos. I think a mix seems good as well. I'm super excited! The bantams were broody as all get out so I'm relieved to hear quail don't often brood!@@gardenonthemoors

A great clip. The vegetation looks like the kind of place I imagine quail wanting to hang out. As a kid, I only ever saw quail running along the furrows in my Grandfather's farm. Now I'm planning a similar natural aviary for my own quail.

Thank you! Yes the quail love to hang out around the vegetation. Have fun making your aviary! ☺️

Will they not kill the plants with over does of nitrogen i.e. poop
@gardenonthemoors11 ай бұрын
No they're actually fine with it! We tend to go for grasses which enjoy the additional nitrogen, but the stocking density we have means that their poop is well spread out and thin which doesn't cause high enough concentrations to kill a plant.
