As you know, MT. St. Helens has been very helpful in helping us realize that what we used to believe took. "millions of years", things can happen in a matter of hour, or days!

I completely disagree Mark V ... Tom was both knowledgeable and perfectly verbally covered this very interesting subject. With a lifetime of study comes an overview thats very difficult to beat.

Is it possible for a lava bomb from Rainier to get to Lakewood near Tacoma? Or is there another way for one , or two , to get there ? (Buried all but 1 inch above ground,covered with light brown patina, they are 6x6 ish inches, lots of small river rocks in my yard also)

Nick Zentner and Tom here from the same university , are saying two different things about the magma in the magma chamber. Tom here says that it is thinner and runnier than St. Helens , but Nick is saying that both Rainier and St. Helens have a thick , ( more silicone rich ) magma . which one is it ?? Is the Rainier magma thick or thin ?? The two must get together and reach an agreement . Has not anyone ever taken samples of Rainer solidified lava to see ?? .
@jabom22
@jabom22 5 жыл бұрын
They can be both classified as Think and still have one of them be a little runnier. The original material that makes up the lava may not be that uniform :) So in the end it all comes down to the exact percentage of silica etc.

@@blakensteina1blakensteina162 It is often impossible to locate on the maps and photographs the particular features he is discussing. It would enhance our understanding if we were able to locate these features more clearly. Even though I paused the presentation, I could not find the dot formed by his laser pointer.

OTHER SOUCES SAY THAT THE OCEANIC PLATE IS MOVING AT A RATE OF 3 TO 4 INCHES PER YEAR .....NOT 4 CMS At 3 inches , that is APROX. 23 billion cubic miles of plate material moving into and under the subduction zone over a period of 4 thousand years. Now you are saying only 4 cms ?? Pacific Northwest Seismic Network says that the plate is moving into the subduction zone at a rate of 3 to 4 inches .
@nophead
@nophead 5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps 4 cms is the rate the oceanic plate is moving but North America is also moving west towards it faster, so the subduction rate is higher.

Speaking of "millions of years ", apparently some bright person decided to test some brand new rock from MT. ST. HELENS, and tho it should have tested as being basically zero-- it tested as being 2.5 million years old!!!!!. So our testing methods and presumed ages leave something to be desired.

Good presentation... but could be better. Not denigrating the data... that's set. But his presentation leaves something to be desired. It's like listening to someone read a phone book. Needs more "punch" or "oomph". There's no doubt that Tom knows his subject it's just that bringing it to the public's eyes and ears needs more work.

The lecturer is supposing that its audience is a bunch of ignorant kids and excuse himself when he plugs the correct terms. For one thing, it is insulting for most peoples. Please, do not suppose anything about your audience and don't worry if there is anything 'technical' in your lecture. People who are interested enough will all by themselves, find the definition of ANY so-called technical word. Got it?

i do not like the word "lahar". i went to two online english-javanese dictionaries and it is used to translate the english word "lava". i suspect it may even be a cognate. if you go to wiktionary there's a javanese saying "i thought you guys had a word for this already".

Impact physics, fluid dynamics/mechanics, spatter/splatter dynamics, ballistic trajectory, Coriolis effect, ejecta blanket & Newton's 3rd and Gravity. All can be shown to make a plausible argument in favor of an impact event & subsequent ejected material field/blanket could answer most of the anomalous geophysical record of American continents. As well as current topography of the West coastlines of North, Central & South American continents. it's just math & physics F=ma enjoy the science... *h

Great presentation, horrible speaker. Tons of great images, sir has terrible diction, is clearly unclear about where his focus is, and uses too much broken language. Seems to be speaking to an elementary school level. Would give 2:10.
